I like how in Japan they get a choice to be part of the jury unlike American citizens.

This is not the American system so I think it is important that the people want to be there maybe over time it will evolve. I wonder if salary men have to be released by their company - if so I bet the get pressured to say they do not want to attend, even if they do!
Not a Japanese citizen so I won't be there!

I wonder how much they get paid.....

they should not let people off too easily, otherwise they will be left with self-righteous people who tend to vote guilty, and the system will be even worse...
have to find out what kind of screening process they plan to use.

I still don't understand why on earth there is any necessity for implement the worst parts of the American law system. A laymen is also very easily influenced by emotions, so I find this whole laymen jury thing highly problematic and quite susceptible to easy manipulation by good rhetorics.

There is no point to introducing this system. Everyone knows under Japanese law you are beaten till you confess, publicly humiliated, made to make an apology, pay a huge fine, get a new job and carry on.

It was never answered whether LTRs or only citizens are required to serve. From the article saying that people's names were pulled from electoral records, I would assume I am not going to be contacted. Anyway, once in the US I wrote on a summons under the any reason you wouldn't be able to serve section "only god can judge guilt or innocense" and mailed it back. Dismissed from service and never called again. I would have to come up with something equally snarky here if they wanted me. The jury system is imperfect at best as it carries the prejudices of the jury menbers. In Japan which has more group think I believe this will be a disaster.
