Japan is finally headed out of the 50s and into the 60s

So they got .000001% of the people who are actually smoking weed. Yawn, who cares, legalize it and tax it.

What is this detector I need to get me one of them.

Is anyone else alarmed that more then 3 times as many people were caught with stimulants (broad category I realise) than weed? Does that indicate that in Japanese society, three times as many people do stimulants than weed?

I think the headline should be that Japan may have a bigger problem with illegal hard drugs than illegal soft drugs. And that number has declined!

Timorborder I think the word you seek is throw (the verb) not through (the preposition). You high or something?

Fryingmonkey, those were the days. I believe mushrooms and peyote (!) etc became illegal in 2002. I bought some shrooms in Shinjuku once, very nice. Did I go on a one man murdering spree? I did not.

This is very worrying. I was actually just discussing it in the izakaya last night over 10 beers with my salarymen friends. Something must be done to stop the evil influence of drugs in Japan...

Looks like mostly kids in dorm rooms where people gossip and no chance of keeping things a secret. Plus, these kids are probably the life of the party, so it is easy to attract the attention of a do-gooder eager to point a finger to keep everyone aligned to the social program.

Not convinced by these numbers at all. It would be helpful to know why they were going up, or down. A good portion of the fluctuation is more likely attributable to social indescretions than social trends. Also, more people are probably thinking and not believing the propoganda/group think.

I also agree, what is detecting? Actions of a detective? Smelling? A special electronic device from bic camera on the third floor?

THis is the beginning of the end for Japan

Make it legal and put it in vending machines like cigarattes, requiring TASPO cards to detect eligibility to purchase.

[Not convinced by these numbers at all.] -- Well dope does make you paranoid.

I think one should look into the historical facts of hemp and marajuana use throughout history, especially Japanese/Asian history, before coming to such dogmatic conclusions.
