Remains of fetus found in drainage pipes of Chiba apartment building

Police in Asahi, Chiba prefecture, said Monday that the remains of a fetus were discovered having been flushed into drainage pipes of an apartment building, and that a 21-year-old Thai woman living in the apartment is being questioned.

Police received a call on Sunday morning from a plumber who said that he had been called to fix the pipes of an apartment where the Thai woman said she could not flush her toilet properly, Sankei reported. When the drainage pipes were cleared, the plumber noticed that the remains of a fetus came out. The 30-cm-long female fetus, which was still attached to the placenta, was estimated to have been six months old.

Police said the Thai woman living in the apartment has been arrested for remaining in the country illegally following the expiration of her visa in January. The woman was quoted by police as saying she had bled heavily into the toilet some time ago.

So wrong, can the government set up a panel to figure out what the hell is going on

This is all too frequent in Japan. When you fall through the net in Japan you really fall. Very sad

Nothing to do with a government

Sandhonour. I've seen that everywhere

30cm is a 22 weeks fetus, In Japan the mother could just say to a doctor that it would be bad for her future to have it and the result would have been the same (minus the need of a plumber). Why there is suddenly a need for a government panel?

It's sad for any woman to have to go through a miscarriage and particularly one in this manner. I hope whomever the woman is that carried that child is able to get the counselling and help she needs.

Hrm, she has been overstaying her visa since January so far I see little proof of it being her.

Rubbish gets stuck at different point, a friend came home and found his flat flooded with toilet refuse some upstairs neighbor flushed and it got stuck below my friend. He was on vacation for 3 weeks

Sometimes I wish media outlets would have a section titled 'Horror' or 'Caution', with no sub heading or lead in to what new horrendous act has been discovered, just so on some days --or maybe all days-- we can choose not go into the darkness.

if she can speak japanese, why not give her a chance,,she's young, i'm sure she can contribute back, work as a part-time and perhaps attend any college..i don't like the fact that she has to deal with her problem alone. and i doubt as well if she will have any second chance.

Hopefully she is telling the truth

So the crime here is she overstayed her visa, right? Miscarriages happen.

She can't get in trouble for having a miscarriage, And that poor girl will now be traumatized when she goes up against a government panel about a questionable occurrence and overstaying a visa.. Overkill much?

She can't get in trouble for having a miscarriage

I believe she can be charged for illegal disposal of a body - if the fetus is proven to be hers. Although I don't know how they work with unintentional disposal of a corpse if she truly was unaware. And this is also assuming it is hers.

Currently she is in trouble for the visa over stay. The rest is conjecture.

Wrong. 30cm would be over 23 weeks. In order to have an abortion the fetus must be 21 weeks or less in Japan.

She obviously "fell through the net" on purpose. It's called visa dodging and is rewarded with deportation from just about any country in the world.

Wrong. 30cm would be over 23 weeks. In order to have an abortion the fetus must be 21 weeks or less in Japan.

Mid term Abortion is until 21 weeks and 6 days, (a day short of 22 weeks) so its perfectly possible that the fetus can be legally aborted, specially because length is an average, as long as the mother gives a believable date of last menstruation (even if its ONE day later than the real date) the hospital would carry the abortion without any trouble.

I insist that this single day of difference is nothing to call for a government panel.

She may have compelling reasons to be forced to give birth in the toilet. If she had given birth in a hospital or such, the fetus or small baby would have been able to see this world.

I'm terribly sorry for both of them.

maybe she just had a miscarriage, if one intentionally dumps a fetus in a toilet she'd be a total moron to call a plumber afterwards. accusing someone of murder without having enough details is not a very logical thing to do, Jim. plus, overstaying your visa does not necessarily make you a murderer.
