Runaway drug smuggler found dead at hospital in Fukuoka
A convicted smuggler of illegal amphetamines from North Korea who ran away from a hospital in Chiba Prefecture has been found to have died of a disease over the weekend at another hospital in the city of Fukuoka, prosecutors said Monday.
Atsunori Fukushima, 69, a member of a gang affiliated with the Matsuba-kai crime syndicate, was undergoing an appeal trial but was hospitalized Feb. 18 in Chiba Prefecture after the Tokyo High Court decided on Feb 14 to suspend his detention due to his deteriorating health. But he went missing from the hospital on Feb. 24 and police had been searching for him.
