Saitama policeman arrested for damaging trunk of taxi while intoxicated

A Saitama prefectural policeman has been arrested after he damaged the trunk of a taxi while intoxicated.

According to police, the 27-year-old officer from Urawa police station was arrested for property damage. TV Asahi reported that the incident occurred just before 1 a.m. Sunday near JR Omiya Station. Police said the officer was standing in the way of a taxi driving in the roundabout and as the car drove around him, he turned around and pounded the trunk of the car with his fists, denting it.

Following his arrest, the policeman was quoted by police as saying he was so drunk that he couldn't even remember the incident.

Police said Monday the taxi company and the officer have reached a settlement and that charges against the officer would be dropped.

...he was so drunk that he couldn’t even remember the incident.

And there you have it. Works every time, for every incident. Japan really does not develop at all does it. For if it did, it would proactively let go of this nut. To have an officer, who cannot control his drinking, seems to me like a pretty bad idea. No doubt will the tired old people in charge disagree with me and 'punish' this young clown by making him eat a lot of hamburgers or do some pushups. Case closed, back to the koban and relax... What a joke.

Seems like Saitama's trying to maintain its title as crime capital of Japan this fiscal year. This guy and the train thief make two in one day!

That said, I agree with Knox. The 'I can't remember because I was drunk' is no excuse to be let off lightly.

glad to see we all share the same feelings towards taxies!

All we'll and good, they reached an agreement. Bit now what about some internal discipline for the officer?

What's his name and rank please.

i am sure he will get his share of embarrassment back at his Urawa police station, and now is going to have to hard earn any respect going forward...

Hmmm, no mention about the taxi driver driving dangerously. I've seen them drive like they are on a formula one track in the early morning. This officer should be thankful he's still alive.

Disillusioned: "Hmmm, no mention about the taxi driver driving dangerously."

No guarantee that he did, especially with no mention of it, unless you consider driving AROUND a person standing in the middle of a roundabout 'dangerous driving' and not just the obvious stupidity of the person standing there. In any case, it does not excuse his actions, nor his excuses.

No wonder many use this excuse in Japan.......it works for police officers so why not everyone else?

smithinjapan Driving around a person, without stopping when a pedestrian is on the road and at a roundabout ? it doesnt matter how drunk the pedestrian was, that taxi driver license should be immediately revoked and himself jailed
