In this photo he sure looks like he's on something. Perhhaps it's from prolonged use.

How can you be a former pop-idol. Won't you always be a pop-idol if you were one to begin with just from maybe a certain period like the 80's, 90's etc...? It's not like a title or anything.

Two years? Is that all? I was hoping for at least 5 years with hard labor for this hardcore druggie surfer. Perhaps the prosecutors should also come under suspicion for being so lenient.

Umm, no offence Timor Border, but you sound a little out of touch with reality, and modern times. The reality is, he was caught with less than 1g of a drug (for personal use). Im not condoning it - taking this drug is madness and stupidity - but to argue that he should receive over 5 years suggests you may just be still be living in a bygone age where drugs had not been invented. No offence, as I said.

This is the song that never ends, isn't it? I'm really tired of reading about these useless skin bags. My condolences to their child.

"I still don't get, how he calls himself a "pro" surfer. How does one make a living at it?"

How do you make a living as a pro surfer? Not by doing meth, that's for sure! Surfing in competitions that award prize money mostly, and endorsements. Can't imagine this guy being much good for that, though!

  • bgaudry at 11:42 AM JST - 22nd October

I repeat if this professional surfer goes to jail, it will be a huge waste of talent. All those poor people who won't be able to enjoy him ripping through those waves and being all narly. Sad day.

Legality aside, there are good drugs and bad drugs, and you don't want to get involved in this one. I hope you're just trolling :-)

Not trolling Darren. I've done my share of chemicals, including this one, and I don't consider it to be much different danger-wise from many others.

self-styled professional surfer? What is self styled? I never heard of this guy winning any competition, and I track surfing and body boarding all the time. Prize money is never really big, and endorsements or sponsors only get you free gear. I say he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and probably cannot even swim.

goldsounds: I agree with what you're saying. I think it partly depends on the drug but it depends on the person's personality, too. Certainly, some drugs are more harmful than others but it's also true that some people just seem to be more vulnerable to getting addicted.

If I was the judge assigned to Ms Sakai's trial and if she offered me a BJ for a suspended sentenance I would do it in a heartbeat.

    Are you insane ?

Please tell us the truth...got some problem with that "surfer" father with that old and famous shop for ski wear ?

I wonder which is worse? Totally legal paint thinners, or this? I know for sure, if a kid does the paint thinner thing for a while, he's damamged for good, but doesn't go to jail or have criminal record.

  • SBBarnes at 08:26 PM JST - 22nd October

Drug are like good cutlery. They can be good and useful (even the recreational kind). Or, you might accidentally cut yourself. (OD) Or intentionally cut yourself (suicide). Or cut another (administer an OD, cause an accident while on drugs).

Alcohol is a drug. But we don't ban it. Knives cut but we don't ban them. These two were not hurting anyone, not even themselves. The proof is in the pudding. No harm, no foul. Let them go. And drop this crumby story already, news media. Its stale.

  • usaexpat at 11:28 PM JST - 22nd October

I say give him some time in the pokie for being a sh*thouse rat and throwing his wife under the bus with the cops. As for the drug charges, what a waste of time. The only thing that would change if all drugs were legalized is that we would get more tax revenue and the cops would have to catch real criminals. People who use drugs will always use drugs, legalizing them doesn't mean everyone will turn into junkies.

Ha, cool. Probably the same spoon he uses to cook-up his meth now.
