Police in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, have arrested a 36-year-old member of the Maritime Self Defense Forces for the murder of his 25-year-old wife after he strangled her at their home.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Shigeo Iwata, strangled his wife Ayumi as she slept at around 1 a.m. on Monday. NTV reported that Iwata called police who rushed to the scene. Ayumi was taken to hospital where she died a short time later.

The couple lived with their two children who were unharmed.

Police said that two years ago, Ayumi consulted them about her husband abusing her. However, only two months after that, she informed police that the abuse had ceased and that she was no longer in need of assistance, NTV reported.

Wakarimasen- Poor taste man,

Just speculating but most likely He convinced her to inform the police that the abuse had stopped. Does the JSDF have internal investigators for these sort of cases? my first 6 years in the USAF my soul job was to investigate cases regarding DV (domestic Violence) that had any relation to military personnel. If they do then there is some serious lack of attention to this case. Those poor kids, I hope they're not scared from this and hopefully they have some loving relatives that are able to take them in seeing as the father is CLEARLY unfit and unworthy of taking care of them.

Most military families experience combinations of the following difficulties at different points in their lives - serious financial pressures, frequent moves, family separation, isolation from peer and family support systems, and strong pressure on the wife not to jeopardize her husband's career as a servicemen. These factors are also frequently associated with domestic violence in the general population.

She must've gone through continue physical and psychological violence and verbal dehumanization. Women are vulnerable when they are not economically independent. Even if women are sheltered from abusive husbands for few weeks, they have no house to return to other than their husbands.

This is the Japanese Self-Defense force, in effect, and with a few exceptions, a 9 to 5 job as a government employee.
