Severed legs discovered in Niigata parking area
NIIGATA —
Police said Tuesday that what appears to be two human legs severed below the knee were discovered in a parking area along a national highway in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture.
Police are currently investigating the crime as abandonment of a corpse. The legs were discovered by a man from Kanagawa Prefecture who had stopped there Tuesday morning. The limbs were found laid out next to each other wearing no shoes and socks. Nearby, a piece of wrapped-up cloth was also found with what appears to be bloodstains on it.

There are an inordinate amount of body parts turning up lately; in rivers, the ocean, forests, you name it. It's like they're not even making the slightest effort to hide them any more.

When I compare crime in my home country to Japan, I am happy to be in Japan. But one thought. In my home country I was always on guard. Security for home, keeping watch over what is going on around me every day and just being aware.
In Japan I am far less attentive and far less secured in how I live. Maybe time to change this. But it seems that real threats in Japan come from family or very random actions that noone could properly defend against. That is what makes crime here creepy and stories like this so terrifying.

Abandonment of a corpse? Two feet do not a corpse make! Depending on how the stumps (and the rest of the body) are treated, it's quite possible for the victim to continue living.

Japan may be consider a safe country, the crimes are inhumane. Not sure if this is a psychological problem. Some of the perpetrator are not serial killers. How do one make sense of a crime like this one?

What makes you think it was a Japanese behind this crime? Anyone regardless of nationality can be a person of interest at this point. Let investigators do their job.

It wouldn't surprised me if it is. You're right it could be anyone or this may not be a crime at all. Maybe those "appear to be two human legs" were amputated. Who knows. We should let the investigators do their job because they always get their man/woman/story.

Now about the body parts strewn all around the country : time to read again "Out", this amazing thriller written by Kirino Natsuo... It is fiction, but in blood and gore japanese reality is on par with the best fiction.
And another comment about the investigation framework : putting things into categories is a national mania, does it help making progress ?

crazy... yakuza tend to hide their crimes very well. "Sinking" is quite popular with them. who would just lay some legs out in the parking lot.

Freespeech: Funny you should mention out. I just picked up an English copy from a friend and read it a month or so ago. While I wouldn't call it world-class writing, and the ending was a cop-out, I will admit that I read it all in more or less one sitting. Good book, all told.
Try not to be tired with JT's commentary on 'what appears to be' or, 'alleged this and that'; you cannot state for a matter of fact what has not yet been proven and/or convicted (in the case of 'alleged') or you are liable for any slander lawsuits (or is it libel? hah). They are just reporting it as it's reported in the papers. They have to use vagueries or risk a claim of the aforementioned, among others.

There's more to this. I saw another report stating that the cloth contained a torso with the head and hands dismembered (believed to be a young male) with multiple stab wounds, with the severed legs laid beside the bound cloth in the ditch. Absolutely barbaric and horrific.

There is a sickness that pervades a small segment of Japanese society. Perhaps it's the sense of isolation that the Japanese sense of etiquette and reserve demands from its ethnic brethren. The crime rate is certainly lower than other countries but the brutality and depravity seems more prevalent.

You are absolutely right regarding the legal precautions in the wording of news. All the same, it amuses or gets on nerves (depending on the individual), but I personally feel that it has the perverse effect of making things more remote from reality, of putting a sort of standardized makeup on the hideousness of crime.
Just befor moderator realizes that I am drifting out of topic : I agree with you about "OUT", interesting but not a remarkable book, heavy, long, a car that sometimes has a fuel supply hiccup and then manages to pickup speed again ; to make it worse, the French translation that I read is really mediocre. I believe Ms Kirino should be known for "The Real World", not for "Out".
