Student wins auto race using stolen sports car

Three Osaka university students, two aged 20 and one aged 21, have been arrested over the theft of two luxury sports cars earlier this year. One student used one of the stolen cars to participate in an auto race, which he won, Sankei Shimbun reported Thursday.

According to police, the first car, a BMW, was stolen in February from an automotive shipping company in Osaka's Suminoe Ward. The trio next stole a Nissan GT-R from a logistics center in Chuo Ward of Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, in April. The cars were valued at 27 million yen.

Police said one of the students used the stolen Nissan GT-R to participate in a racing competition which took place in Hyogo on April, and he won the race. Prior to the race, he switched license plates with his mother's car, police said.

They were picked up after one of them caused an accident in May while driving the stolen BMW. The students, who were minors when they stole the cars, were quoted by police as saying they wanted to drive fast cars.

Slammer ! They were minors ... We'll be lucky if they got ten bangs on the bot with a slipper.

Throw the book at these idiots.

There are worse things they could have done. I agree about giving them a stiff penalty, but I couldn't help but to smile when I read the article.

...... I couldn't help but to smile when I read the article.

You might not have been smiling had one of the cars been yours Dan.

They must have stolen the keys as well I'm guessing.

Why do I get the feeling that instead of being punished the guy is going t land the job of his dreams?

Yeah, I thought this was kind of cute at first. A video game or a Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift movie come to life. Then I realized these guys were lucky simply to be arrested rather than cremated after killing themselves in a crash, or-- even worse-- arrested after killing someone else.

Crime is crime, but you have to give them marks for sheer bravado. It's almost like turning up to a police benefit event and selling the punters hash cookies.

The students, who were minors when they stole the cars, were quoted by police as saying they wanted to drive fast cars.

Oh, well so long as they had a good reason I guess its OK.

Priceless! This sort of thing is so unusual that everyone's gobsmacked.

Hope they pay for their crime and the day will come when they can reflect upon those days saying like "We were too young at the time." I guess most people did wrong to some extent when they were young after all.

In racing here in the U.S., instead of saying something like "gambatte," people often say, "Drive it like you stole it!"
