Why, my dear onerldoneppl, maybe he did? There are lots of ways to learn someones address in Japan, other than the obvious phone book. Municipal records and course the old koseki and jyuminhyou will all help find someone's address. Now I know I always regret arguing against conspiracy theories from the point of reason, but if your conspiracy theory rests on the fact that he couldn't possibly have found their addresses without official or criminal help, that is a failure of your imagination and/or lack of knowledge.
Phone book vs cumbersome conspiracy theory - your choice.

Anyway, go to it armchair Sherlocks - I'm sure the police will appreciate all of your sound, rational points. Of course, it's far more likely that that a conspiracy of the state and/or organized crime (motive anyone?) did this over one deranged individual with an unusual love of animals. I am getting a good chuckle out of it, if nothing else.

Oh the importance of reading past the headline! It seems that the killing of the dog 34 years ago was just the starting point. From there he realized that hundreds of thousands of strays are put down every year. He is more like a self-styled animal rights vigilante than a guy with a grudge over one dog.

Japan's Manchurian Candidate:
Culprit: Ok, boss...the deed is done.
Culprit: Good...now is the dupe ready?
Culprit: Yeah, he drank the "cocktail"...he's ready!
Culprit: Koizumi, listen up, they killed your puppy...
Koizumi: Grrrr!
Meanwhile at J-Police Headquarters:
You guys check every dog-pound in Japan, and pronto!

Well, it may be this is part of the man's rationale, but my guess is that being unemployed and sinking further and further into 'meaninglessness' was what pushed him over the edge, as it does so many Japanese without a care for life.
I notice the J-media has dropped the 'trail' of the Chinese shoes, at any rate.

RakishGadfly: You seem a tad bitter about something. If you hate all the conspiracy theories and what not, you have a funny way of showing it -- ranting for three or more posts about people's foolishness on posting this and that. I happen to believe in this case you are right; it's nothing more than some nut who selectively chose his prey. Still, I stand by my first suggestion; if you don't like all the crap, don't waste your time reading and commenting on it.

mcheeky, yes, I believe that animal rights terrorists may just have found a new poster hero for their cell walls. (OK, he targeted the wrong department of government, but everything else checks out.) A savior/saviour, one who is not afraid to put animal lives above humans! The new Che Guevara!

What an idiot he is. Please take him fast to shrink he need help, and mechanical adjustments in his head. This is unbelievable story. Never came across something like that. Shrink please help him. Was he hiding his secret for 34 years? Watch out clock is ticking.

Total nutcase. What else is there to say.

He found out these addresses at the public library. Finding the address of officials isn't that hard in most countries.

Quote from end of above article: "According to the Environment Ministry, some 340,000 dogs and cats were put down by local governments across the nation in fiscal 2006 after they failed to find new owners for the abandoned animals."
Who is to decide that they are all 'abandoned'? Perhaps some of them might have been lost, and perhaps even now the owners are searching for them.
Get 'em chipped and collared, people!

nandakanda -
Sadly, a lot of the animals are brought to the centres by the owners themselves because they've grown too big/too old/too sick... or their undoctored bitch kept outside 24/7 has had yet another litter and they just can't be bothered anymore.
Dogs and cats that are truly lost are a different matter, of course....I understand you have just one week to find your furry friend before the animal 'welfare' people 'dispose' of it. Again sadly, many centres especially in rural areas don't have microchip readers, so chipping isn't the solid insurance it should be. And collars do come off.
The only sure-fire solution is don't ever let them out of your sight.
Moderator: Back on topic please.

So this guy is just bat-sh*t insane. In 2005, he threatened to murder a group of construction workers for being too loud. He copied down their license plate numbers and screamed that he could look up their addresses and murder them all.
In an unrelated incident, he crossed the street slowly and as a taxi passed him, he leaped backwards and claimed the taxi hit him. He later filed a medical certificate claiming he sustained injuries that would take 7 to 10 days to heal. He repeatedly submitted such certificates for the course of a year, visiting a hospital almost every day paid for by the taxi company.

Stop believing the words of a crazy person. He murdered because he wanted to. He likes it.

They found DNA from one victim so far on one of the knives. He prepared well, they said on the news last night that he wrapped the knife handles so they wouldn't slip and made some other modification I can't remember now(to sleepy last night) that would make it seem very deliberate and well-planned.
His own father took the dog to the pound, it makes no sense for him to kill pension officials over a dog at the hokenjyou decades later, is he trying for an insanity defense?
Himajin at 09:47 AM JST - 26th November
'too' sleepy...
