The man drove away from the hotel on a motorcycle with Sano riding on the back Come on.... Unbelievable... on the back of a motorcycle...? I guess it's not too much of a stretch considering some of the scams JN people are able to pull on their own countrymen...

She was probably framed- sold drugs by his friend earlier, he shows up saying he knows re drugs, she quietly goes with him on the bike hoping to take care of it with a bribe so she's not arrested. Not enough money, or rape was the original goal, and she's murdered.

So after 4 robberies it finally took a murder for the police to actually catch the guy.

And the idea that she was killed for resisting is bull. If you are driven to the middle of nowhere and stripped naked it's a pretty damn good bet something bad will happen unless you try do something.

    Overconfidence strikes again!

I'm glad this article has now at least been updated to include the findings of these police about the "David" suspect as it puts all the speculative postings to rest on the issue. I hope they give ol Dave a nice 3rd world type of justice for this creeps evil deeds.

Did the MP3 player have the guys name on it or something? I mean my mp3 player doesn't have my name on it. If it was purchased with cash it's hard to trackback then with a credit card which I doubt this guy has. There's more to this story that is being told.

Getting a fake uniform and badge might be easy, but a police identification card is a little harder to do.

He's supposed to be a thief yet he leaves his mp3 player by the body? And he strips her to prevent her from escaping - this doesn't make sense given that he clearly had enough control over her to have her climb on the back of his motorcycle.

I think there is a lot more to this story... he went to some big extremes (police costume, fake ID, brazen kidnapping) to rob a single tourist...

  • Betting at 10:46 PM JST - 4th October

I think that half the speculation that is being thrown about here is completely overboard in the extreme. And has anyone here seen Indonesian police ID? For all we know it might be easy to forge, and any well-meaning or naive person might be easily tricked by some fake ID presented to them by a national of that country.

I mean my mp3 player doesn't have my name on it.

Plenty of mp3 players today that used by people as USB memory. So they serve two purpose, one for music player and another is to carry your data around with you. If we read the news carefully the police track down where David work first. Since people carry their USB memory for business purpose mostly that include office documents.

He's supposed to be a thief yet he leaves his mp3 player by the body

There was a struggle, read another JapanToday article for this, and it was dark. Since there was fight going on, the only thing that David come in his mind is to escape from the crime scene before other people come.

any well-meaning or naive person might be easily tricked by some fake ID presented to them by a national of that country.

Actually this can be happen to any other country as well, you wouldn't want to have any law related problem in foreign country. The best thing for foreigner usually just obey the procedure and continue with their trip.

this doesn't make sense given that he clearly had enough control over her to have her climb on the back of his motorcycle.

Japanese they are obedience to authority and David take advantage for this.

    Sakurasuki....good points. Totally agree.

I don't understand the desire to go vacation in a developing nation so many well-publicized troubles. This is not to say, "oh, she deserved it" because most certainly she did NOT.

hmm, i remember reading that the lady was found in this isolated area due to the smell, which would mean that there was no real hurry for the guy to leave his MP3 player there. He could even have gone back to pick it up. I really hope he is the guy, but who knows.

Also, Lowly's theory is the only one that maks sense as to why the two women would go willingly. There has to be a drug angle to this. They should do toxicology analysis on Ms. Sano AND the other one.

  • sakurasuki at 07:41 AM JST - 5th October

    to Morriconelover thank you.

uhhh, I think ill leave my mp4 player for good luck.

The perpetrator already done his crime four times before he targeted Japanese one. It's already become a routine for him, he would use his mp3 player during the crime and after the crime like nothing really going one.

I don't understand the desire to go vacation in a developing nation so many well-publicized troubles.

The fact is a lot tragedy and crime in Bali that made to International News is rarely done by Bali people, most of them is conducted by outsider from Bali Island and security getting really tight after the attack on Bali few years ago, so the safety issue is quite good enough compare to other area in that country. Still it's the best of one favorite of tourist resort for Japanese, it's easy to find the flight from Narita to Bali compare from Narita to Indonesia Capital City.

Actually the crime scene where Rika's body was found is not that isolated but relatively isolated compare to the hotel where Rika stayed. The crime scene just a place with lot of bushes so it can be one of good place to hide something. It's hard to find portable mp3 that looks small as USB in a place of full bushes during the night. After he killed her, he tried to go away from Bali and of course he wouldn't care anymore with his USB, that's why the police caught him in different Island.

You could see how the crime scene looks like in here http://www.rkb.ne.jp/jnnnews/media/DT20091003020002/asx/news4249258_12.asf.asx

Now we find out her friend had gone with him before he came and took her? And whats with this hotel security guard and not checking that his guests are being taken away by actual federalis? Def something we are not being told here, the drug angle being most likely.

  • BuddhismTech at 01:43 AM JST - 3rd November

Drugs had NOTHING with the murder. I am so surprised that many of you have no idea about why did she come to Bali.

Many, many Japanese FEMALE tourists come to Indonesia, Malaysia, and the southeast Asia with ONE purpose: SEX and pleasure. I feel so sorry for Japanese men, especially virgins.
