I am still at a loss of words for how they are able to acquit her. Now I will admit I don't know one hundred percent of her guilt or innocence, which is more than I can say for others that won't admit as such, but as people usually side with the foreigners in these cases, I will side with the prosecutors. Who in this day and age can claim that they were unaware of what was in their possessions? If this happened in Southeast Asia, no mercy. She sure got away with it.
expressed regret that she had to be detained even after she was cleared of the charge
She was found innocent and they still kept her in jail? Whether she 'actually' did it or not is beside the point. Are the Japanese police legally able to keep innocent people in jail EVEN AFTER a court has ruled them innocent of a crime? Cheney must love Japan.
The reason that she was deported was because SHE HAD OVERSTAYED her visa and was in Japan illegally. That was what the report stated the other day here on Japan today.
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but someone with knowledge of j-law proposed this theory:
The prosecutor asked that her detention extended. The judge refused to extend the detention. The prosecutor appealed that decision and the judge agree to extend the detention. In that case, it would be an example not of acuittal followed by second trial (double jeapardy).

If she is acquitted, why is she deported? So the finding is innocent but guilty? Can anyone make sense of this?

Let me get this: The was deported because she overstayed her visa while being imprisoned? Ain´t that convenient.
