Teacher held for allegedly abducting school girl at knifepoint in Hachioji
TOKYO —
Police said Friday that a 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly abducting an 11-year-old girl at knifepoint on Thursday in Hachioji.
According to TV news reports, the suspect, who has been identified as Kohei Tomiyama, is a teacher at Shimofuda Elementary School in Kawasaki. Tomiyama was seen by eyewitnesses brandishing a fruit knife and forcing the girl into his car in Hachioji just after 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses contacted the police who gave chase and found the vehicle around a kilometer away. According to police, the girl was found sitting in the back seat with her hands tied. Tomiyama was taken into custody. TV Asahi reported that Tomiyama told police he wanted to take photos of the girl naked.

Thankfully he's an inept idiot. Luckily he did this now, and he can be put away before he gets in any more classrooms.

Highly unlikely. He'll be given a rough warning with a 3 month jail stay followed by a suspended sentence for 3 years. That's the current "judicial" system we are subjected to these days. Thank your corrupted/draconian government for that.
Now, if he had actually done "any" real damage to her, like rape, he might have to do some time (typically 1~2 years). Aside from warnings and some heavy fines, Nude photo taking does not warrant incarceration under the current laws in this country, sorry.

Although this didn't take place in school, it's well known that pedophiles seek jobs that put them in contact with children, especially in positions of authority, such as a teacher, the better to coerce them.
Britain regularly does background checks on applicants for these kinds of positions. In Japan, it's a lot more lax. For non-Japanese teachers of kids in eikaiwa conversation schools there are no checks at all. I wonder how many come to Japan with this in mind.
I'm glad the girl was found, but I have no doubt she will be traumatised by this. Was she a pupil at the teacher's school? News updates please JT.

"Many" is a bit excessive, wouldn't you say? The more accurate statement would be, "Some men become teachers to get close to their prey."
But yes, it's a good thing he was caught. I'm glad to see that bystanders got involved and made it possible for this girl to still be alive. One can be pretty sure that this teacher's plan to take photos of the girl wouldn't have stopped there once he realized that letting her go afterwards wasn't an option.

Bluewitch,
Actually, you can thank a democratically elected government for sentencing guidelines that may or may not be what you like.
Nor should it. Why would taking photos of someone in the nude be worthy of jail time? Do you mean taking nude photos against someone's will? You need to be more precise in your posts and perhaps put a cap on the unbridled emotion.
Besides, he was caught before any photos were taken. Call me crazy, but I was thinking the kidnapping at knifepoint would be the first thing prosecutors looked at.
As to how much time he serves, I agree that he will probably see a short time in jail followed by a suspended sentence -- primarily because no one was physically injured -- but it's a pretty fair bet he will never work as a public school teacher again after this. He wouldn't be able to get the references and there isn't a board of education out there that would accept the risk of hiring him on to see him do this all again (which is a distinct possiblity with people like this).
Not sure where the "draconian" aspect of Japanese governance comes into play other than you possibly misunderstanding the word, but I strongly suspect your 30+ years in Japan haven't been nearly as harsh as the majority of your posts would suggest.

And everybody was so disgusted yesterday about the teacher who had a couple of beers with diner. Cases like this is where police resources should be. A friend of mine from South Osaka told me 60 women have been attacked in her neighborhood, and she can't walk at night. Time for police to get smart on crime.

Thanks Hatsoff! Actually I am a real teacher, so this kind of news, really really pisses me off! Something needs to done about these perverted scum bags! Not just the laws, but this whole society must have some kind of revolution to bring higher standards of morality to everyone. I feel so sorry for this little girl out there in Hachioji. May this idiot perv burn in hell for all of eternity!

This is the same guy who got fired in May 2006 for inapprpriate touching of a girl in sixth grade. The same city's (Kawasaki) school board of education hires him again in 2009. What's going on? They should be called the school bored of education.

First of all, he wasn't a 'rogue' teacher, he was a real teacher.
Secondly, ''many men become teachers because they want to be close to their prey." - that is the most outlandish and ridiculous statement anyone could ever make! You my friend, have issues!

Ah, the Japanese teaching system! Doesn't matter if you're a psychopath who can't get along with your students for the one week practicum, it just matters that you past a general knowledge test. Some day, perhaps, Japan will become on par with regular teacher training programs. As it is, they hire people with a good noggin, but little or no classroom management skills, as is the case here (to put it mildly). Sick man. Way to go, Japanese Education system!

Maybe we should focus on men who kidnap girls at knifepoint and tie them up first. After that, how about we focus on "perverts"? The key problem here in my mind is not that he wanted naked pictures of her. The key problem here is that he shoved a fruit knife in her face and tried to drive her away. Most perverts don't do that.

smithinjapan: I'm thinking psychotic tendencies and bad classroom management skills are quite different. Many psychos do a very good job of acting normal when they want to, despite any sort of training and/or screening (not just in the education industry, and not just in Japan).
