If it was just to leave home, he could have;
Joined the JSDF.
Become a fisherman, logger, mountain lodge attendant, fireman, cop, agricultural apprentice.
He didn't just want to leave home. He wanted his parents to feel guilty for what he percieved they made him into.
BlueTiger, you forget one thing: he's a minor. He's never going to a maximum security prison - he's going to Disneylaaaaaaaaaaaand! For a year or so. Maybe two. And then won't he be disappointed when they let him out and he's free to go home - just where he didn't want to be.
But Mr. Kariya's family knows he, Kariya, is never coming home. My condolences to his family.
you got a point borscht he will be in disnyland for about 2 and half years cuase hes still a minor despite what he did was premeditated 1st degree murder im sure mr kariya is in heaven cursing that boy for pushing him and his family probby will kill the kid once hes released
‘‘I wanted to go to prison because I wanted to leave my home.’’, he really must have had a messed up home life or was not quite right in the head.
Could he not have asked for help in some form, killing someone and being put in jail is one of the strangest methods of getting away from your home.
I feel truly sorry for Mr. Kariya's death and the pain that it is causing his family.

"58 comic books"
...I think that says a lot, really. Adults reading comics is often a bad sign. Deranged otaku alert!

I guess there are many alternative ways to go to jail in Japan for life without killing anybody...
