Teen held over knife attacks in Saitama, Chiba to get psychiatric test

SAITAMA —

Saitama prefectural police said Thursday that a 17-year-old boy who was recently arrested for attempted murder after he slashed two teenage girls with a knife in Saitama and Chiba last year will undergo a psychiatric examination.

Police said the boy who cannot be named because he is a minor, has admitted to slashing a 15-year-old girl in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, on Nov 18, and to also stabbing an 8-year-old girl in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, on Dec 1. The boy admitted to attacking both girls as they walked home from school.

A court spokesperson said the psychiatric evaluation will consist of a series of tests given over a period of three months, and will ultimately determine if the boy is mentally competent to stand trial, Fuji TV reported.

The boy’s father is also facing charges of corrupting a minor after police determined he kept restricted weapons in his home.

After the boy was arrested, police found over 60 survival knives in his home where he lived with his father, and that 10 of the knives were illegal to possess in a household with minors.

The boy told police his father had purchased several of the weapons on the Internet for him, and that his father encouraged him to carry three of them with him.

When the boy was detained on the street, police found a switchblade knife and a cleaver in his bag. The boy was quoted as telling police that he wanted to kill some passersby.

I always felt quite safe when I lived in Mitaka - even when walking around in the middle of the night it would be very peaceful and quiet, and I definitely don't think I have the wrong impression of Japan...it's mostly safe, almost wherever you go. But why these explosions of violence? It seems once every month, you can read about an isolated incident so bizarre and horrifying that it goes beyond human understanding. Where is the preemptive psychiatric care? Doesn't the school notice that something's wrong with the kids? Are the kids isolating themselves so that they can expertly hide their illnesses from everyone, or are parents, neighbors and teachers simply turning a blind eye?

And has the father also been subject to a test to find out if he has a brain at all or not?

Does anyone know what is different about the 10 knives that are illegal to possess in a household with minors? Having 60 survival knives is bizarre in any case unless father is a dealer or Bear Grylls.

Well in that case, he should ask his daddy to be the passer by. And after he's done with his daddy, he can do himself too and be done and over with. Looser!

This is such a strange piece of news, like idiot father like idiot messed up son?? Or is it messed up son like his psycho dad?? In any case, some body needs to get behind bars ASAP and at least 2 need to get their brains checked out and if daddy is a real psycho and behind all of this evil, let him enjoy the death penalty.

What on Earth good is a psychiatric test going to do?

Psychiatrists know nothing about the mind as evidenced by their inability to cure anyone.

All they can do is dole out pills.

Whether he's nuts or not has nothing to do with the fact that the kid slashed two people and his father was a knife collector!

    Who cares?

    He did what he did.

    Psychiatric Test. Day One.

    Kid: ...

3 months? It's hardly worth the time and money when he is going to get off with a slap on the wrist.

The nut cases are just the tip of the iceberg! So many ticking time bombs walking around Tokyo, etc..

I was actually living in Matsudo at the time this happened. The next day on my way to school our teachers were on the street corners directing the kids to school. They had people everywhere looking for this kid. Also anyone who says he should die because he wants to kill someone you're just as bad as him.

@mastertigurius, @missbatten: I've spent considerable amount of months in both towns, neither have anything to explain this kind of behaviour. If the kid was living with his dad in Vatican city, it would have made absolutely no difference. A time bomb goes off regardless of location.

@panboo, please consider the difference between action and reaction. Even if the means are the same, the reasons may not be, and that makes all the difference between people.
