Three Fukushima prison guards punished for bullying young coworker

FUKUSHIMA —

Three prison guards working at Fukushima prison have been punished for bullying a junior coworker last June. Two men aged 33 and 21 were suspended from duty for one month and a third, aged 26, had his pay reduced by 10% for a period of two months, prison officials said Tuesday.

According to the officials, last June 19 at around 1:30 a.m. in the staff showers, the suspended men poured liquid hand soap over the head and face of the 20-year-old complainant, causing an outbreak of dermatitis. They then shaved part of his body with a razor. The guard who was given a pay cut then shaved another part of the victim’s body at 9 p.m. the same day.

According to prison authorities, the three men said they were just “playing pranks” on their junior colleague.

I wonder what the other "part of the victim's body" was shaved at 9.

Yes, and given the Japanese tendency to squish complaints I'd imagine they have to deal with much worse.

These guys should have been fired.

Ok, a drunken college prank I could understand but aren't these guys supposed to be law enforcement "professionals"??? I couldn't imagine them trying this sort of thing on the prisoners. I'm sure there would be a huge retaliation from the general population resulting in some severly injured prison guards.

This is typical of Japanese authorities are accepting their criminal behavior that this is ok and should continue. The Police and the authorities should've charge these two with the assault and should be in jail. However, in Japan? What a joke when it comes to individual protection. This is worse than China or other third world countries.

If any of my colleagues tried something like this on me, I wouldn't care about my chances, but fists and feet would have been thrown that much I know. Why didn't he retaliate and stand up for himself?

What a little wussy this 20 year old is for a prison guard. I'd fire them all.

One guy with soap in his eyes versus three guys with a razor? I don't think he'd have much of a chance in standing up for himself, personally.

Here we go again with the "why didn't he do blahblahblah" comments. You don't know the situation, or what was going through this guy's mind while being bullied this way. It's easy to be a tough guy when you're not the one in that situation.

Sounds like it's time for them to do a 見学.

Hardly much of a punishment is it? I wonder what the working atmosphere is going to be like there once they all come back from suspension and have to work together again?!

I agree. Where I work, thats called one and done. Thats it, you're gone. You assault a person with fists or objects, you're gone, fired, escorted off the property immediately. If you do it with words, depending you may be gone unless its an actual threat, then its once again, sayonara!
