I'm sure this will be at least as successful as banning the use of cellphones while driving.

So what are they going to threaten to burn the would-be confessers with now?

Officer can I've a fag? "No you not until you confess." Japan must be far behind with smoking issue, most of the world has banned smoking in cop shops. No wonder that so many suspects are charged. It is true that interrogation is a stress and many suspects need a smoke. Just as well give them a pot to confess. I ask: “which smoking will be prohibited?”

Egads, man! Try banning it in places full of people!! Better yet... ban it and actually enforce the ban. Worry about interrogation rooms later!

    Give that man a cookie!

investigators giving cigarettes to suspects will be seen as giving them favorable treatment.

But when playing good cop/bad cop this is ESSENTIAL to the good cop routine! You cannot just take that away and not replace it with something...wait...I know...give them a cookie!

I would think that not having a smoke would create more tension for a smoker under duress. Stop with the stupid excuses! Anyways, I'm always glad to hear about a smoking ban.

I thought smoking was an integral part of it? Cop swings chair around, props one foot up, wallops suspect's head with telephone book, leans over and adjusts light into suspect's face then blows smoke into it... No?

Could this have been brought on by the idiot cop that gave a lighter to a kero soaked perp last year?

  • usaexpat at 12:38 AM JST - 3rd February

Hey coppers I need a smoke I'll get back to you on whether I did it or not after I get a break. Hillarious, especially allwing suspects to take a smoke break during questioning. They say this is a health measure but I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the gasoline soaked dude who went up in flames after the cops gave him a smoke ( 6 months or so ago I can't remember)

One of my favorite lines from Basic Instinct:

"What are you gonna do? Charge me with smoking?"

  • curiosityband at 04:56 AM JST - 3rd February

Are they gonna hand out nicotine gum and/or patches to the suspects or what? Is there a single criminal in Japan who doesn't smoke?

  • zhazam05 at 05:55 AM JST - 3rd February

Now the suspects will have "Suck Wind"until they confess!! Things are going to take a turn for the nasty when this comes about !Mothing worse than a "NIC HEAD"looking for a puff!!!L.O.L.!!

  • soldave at 09:03 AM JST - 3rd February

Health concerns? Is that the concern that another man might try to turn himself into a fireball after the cops gave him a lighter knowing he was covered with kerosene?

  • meanmutha at 11:25 AM JST - 3rd February

I would say that 95% of Japanese criminals are chainsmokers.... they might be onto something here about making them suffer and then giving in.

  • techall at 11:26 AM JST - 3rd February

    Cruel and unusual punishment!

  • Psych at 12:33 PM JST - 3rd February

this "non-smoking" fad is getting way out of hand.

There are a few ways to interpret what and/or how a suspect thinks by the way they move their cig and how they blow smoke. whats next? telling obese people that they need to lose weight before they get interrogated? What other healthy crap is going to be regulated? I bet this non-smoking interrogation rooms will only last a day.
