Tokyo trains defaced with graffiti

TOKYO —

Trains on the Tokyu Oimachi and subway lines were defaced with graffiti on September 16 and 17 respectively, police said Thursday.

According to police, station staff found two train cars spraypainted with graffiti at Futagotamagawa Station in Setagaya around 4:30 a.m. on Sept 16. On Sept 17, graffiti was found all over Tokyo Metro’s subway trains at its depot in Shiohama early in the morning. Their operation schedules were not affected by the graffiti, the companies said.

yokkatane "Their operation schedules were not affected by the graffiti"

Unlike here in Australia, the first site of graffiti on a train they will take it out of service and disrupt operations.

In Australia, that's just an excuse to cover up constant schedule disruptions due to poorly maintained trains and equipment, and untrained late or missing staff.

"nice" graffiti. Where are the artists? Pity ,they should come out and reap the reward of their labours.

Why yes. If your going to be a social psychopath, we should funnel them into anything but graffiti. Yeahright.

Japan is the one place I had hoped that graffiti wouldn't emerge. It's the one so-called form of "self expression" that I wish wouldn't be "copied" from Americans like everything else is, by young Japanese so desperate to establish an identity. I thought that growing up Japanese was still good for instilling that all important Moral Compass. Guess no one knows how to read one of those things anymore.

Knowing their potential for artistic detail though, you might see some amazing pieces of work pretty soon.

I would have avoided using the word "respectively" where it is in the article. It is possible to promote "graffiti" art however and not commit a crime.
