I, too, remember reading this about a month ago. This is a brutal act so I doubt it was the first act of violence for the two 15-year-olds. I would guess that these older boys had been bullying this poor 8-year-old kid before and no one did anything to stop it. Besides receiving proper punishment, these teenagers should have to do community service, they should get counselling and social workers should also check into their family situation. I hope the 8-year-old is able to recover from this tramatic event with support from his family.

Sick. Now there will be much tough talk here in the readers section, but the fact is that because these creeps are "youth", they´ll be let go with a slap on the wrist.

The 8-year old used the older boy's bike without permission, prompting the assault and attempted murder.

You don't want to think that crap like this occurs in Japan but unfortunately it does. What they need to do is to stamp it out by way of severe sentencing. You expect savagery like this to occur in the rest of the world but not in Japan.

Two 15-year olds and three 11-12 year olds against one 8-year old. Those five are so tough and brave!

Each one of those five need to have a beating by five 17-18 year old volunteers. I'll bet there are plenty of volunteers.

I believe they tried to take his bike and he had 'the gall' to object. They beat him up for it, then evidently didn't want to get caught for assault, so instead got caught for attempted murder. Idiots. I am proud of this boy for fighting as he did (in the water) to stay alive despite being beaten and thrown in the ocean, and I too cringe at the thought of the fear he suffered. Pain is one thing... the thought you might or are going to die and the panic that in most cases ensues must be horrific.

These kids deserve to be locked up, as adults. Sorry, but it was clear that the murder was thought out before they tried to toss him in the ocean, even if only for a short time. They discussed what to do to avoid getting caught, and reached a solution: murder. As it is, they'll AT WORST go to a reformatory for a year or two and be released. What is more likely, they'll get off with a slap on the wrist and a cantankerous old judge saying, "I am letting you boys go because I want you to learn from this and be positive members of society."

Unfortunately, this being Japan, if they're under 20, they can't actually be punished. Basically they'll get a slap on the wrist, and be sent out to do it again.

I want the parents of the 8 year-old to post flyers throughout the city with pictures of the attackers and their home phone numbers, and include details on what these "children" ("children" meaning monsters) did to their son. The justice system might be legally prevented from disclosing the identities of these little creeps, but I don't see why the victim's family should be bound by those same legalities. After all, it's a public service!

"Neighbors! Please take a moment to look at the pictures of these individuals. Be aware that on August 6, 2009, these delinquents kidnapped, violently assaulted, and attempted to murder an 8-year-old boy. The 8-year-old was able to survive and these attackers have since been arrested and charged. Since they are juveniles, they will receive (or have received) minimal sentences. Please, when you see these delinquents near your home, call their parents IMMEDIATELY and demand that they come retrieve their offspring and take them home. Doing so will protect the well-being of your children and all the children in our neighborhood."

Even if nobody calls the parents, the public shaming should be enough to make them wish they'd never even CONSIDERED committing this crime.
