I wish the article included the usual cost/price for Chinese bamboo shoots so that we could see the profits earned.

Yet another deceitful criminal to be tried for bad business practices and not for fraudulently obtaining money through deception. Great!

It's amazing that they would take such a risk for a few million yen. People are understanably nervous about food imported from China after recent problems with milk, eels and gyoza. I hope the prosecutors have the bamboo shoots tested for chemical contamination.

It's amazing that they were still pulling this scheme. Don't they follow the news? Dumb and dumber.

If chinese food imports are so dangerous then what are the chinese people in china eating?

  • Yelnats at 11:10 AM JST - 19th October

    I love food.

"were arrested for selling 19 tons of falsely labeled bamboo shoots between June and December 20008 for 10 million yen"

20008? Is this the only figure that has been exaggerated?

  • saru_au at 12:19 PM JST - 19th October

19 tons by the year 20,008 that's not so much :)

"If chinese food imports are so dangerous then what are the chinese people in china eating?" Well, considering there are too many Chinese people in China, a few dead wouldn't make the news. In fact, it would make the Communists look bad. ;)

If Chinese food were so dangerous, why would a Japanese company label them as made in Japan? Unless they weren't really all that dangerous.

If Chinese food were so dangerous, why would a Japanese company label them as made in Japan? Unless they weren't really all that dangerous.

    Straw Man Argument!

The issue here is false labeling, not food safety. A greedy company flat-out lying to consumers. Bottom-line, Japanese people like to see "Made in Japan" more than "Made in China".

  • tokyokawasaki at 02:27 PM JST - 19th October

If the food is so dangerous, why allow it to be imported in the first place?

  • tokyokawasaki at 02:28 PM JST - 19th October

The problem appears to be larger than just a handful of dodgy businessmen. Who approves/inspects imports from China anyway? Maybe they should be investigated first?

  • stirfry at 05:56 PM JST - 19th October

if the japanese weren't suckers who always thought that japanese products were better than foreign products, these shenanigans would probably stop

goodguy, the Chinese are being systemically poisioned in the name of progress and profit. There were news releases last week that a lot of children in China have very high level of lead in their bodies - levels that are going to affect their ability to learn. That, thankfully, isn't being exported to Japan but I tend to avoid Chinese products in the market and in my designs. You just never know what you are getting.

In any case the execs should be given a serious sentence as an example. But the government has to set up better inspection. One of the few times in my life that I would want more government, not less.
