It's a good thing that the US is keeping Japan informed of what goes on onside of Japan. Otherwise, no one would ever know...

Wow, look at all the US haters here. Sure, this truly is not an American issue, but how many times have you read in Japanese news or TV documentaries of crime in US cities? I would say this is a long overdue pay back. Drug usage is in fact a problem in Japan and for those of you who advocate it, more power to you. I'm sure most of you will disagree, but that's what freedom of voicing your opinion is all about.

a growing number of cannabis-related crimes

Cannabis-related crimes? There's no such thing! It's not like the sumo wrestlers and the students were holding up convenient stores while high on pot! Pot smokers are too lazy and docile to commit crimes... it's only a crime because it's illegal to have it.

This is starting to really, really embarrass Japan in the international media.

I think it is all a US conspiracy! Yes, the CIA just wants the Japanese to be as lazy and high as the common American, so they will be stoned enough to buy US made cars from Detroit!

    who cares?

more people drink than smoke pot.

the US is just trying to cause trouble.

they should shut up, and be ashamed for contributing to the illegal drug trade by their stupid drug laws.

  • sageb1 at 12:42 PM JST - 2nd March

indeed, drugs laws == politicians are helping drug criminals to get rich

Oh goodie, I thought Japan would be an easier place to raise drug free children. There goes the neighborhood!

And meth can be easily made in home labratories...I highly doubt that much of it is imported.

If they relaxed the laws towards marijuana then maybe the use of Harder drugs would decline. In japan its the same crime if you get with weed or another harder drug. Go figure. as for the students that got caught , someone ratted them out. Of course university students are smoking up, its what they do for fun! its better than binge drinking.... Sumo wrestlers, they need it to stay HUNGRY and stay BIG. They should get a conditional use pass while they are still competing. But Japan needs to come down heavy on the users and dealers of the heavy drugs.

You all need to grow up! This isn't a report that is saying Japan has a drug problem and the US doesn't or that the US is better when it comes to dealing with its drug problem, it's not critcism. All this report is doing is reporting on the status of Illegal drug use according to japanese laws in japan. Pot use is on the rise in japan, when the US said it was on the rise in the report did it say "ahahah we are better then japan!" No it didn't, it just said that its use had incresae and the trend reveresed itself and that new suppliars have filled in the gap.

When it came to methamphetamine did the US go again in its report claiming it was better then Japan? No the US didn't, did it say Japan's narco unit was not up too the task? No it didn't. It just said that methamphetamine is the largest challenge facing japans narco unit.

When it comes to ecstasy did the US say in the report they are better then japan? No the US didn't, it just stated that japan has been seeing in increase.

The US never once claimed it had its own house in order, it's not claiming they are better then japan when it comes to illegal drugs and it isn't criticizing japan either. All the US is doing is making a report on the Illegal drug situation in Japan based upon japanese laws.

Why is it wrong for the US to make a report on other countries Illegal drug situation? Countries draft reports all the time on US's illegal drug situation, so why can't the US?
