Dumb and dumber. Dumb for hitting them in the first place, dumber for doing a runner. As somebody pointed out earlier, the smell of alcohol wafts over this story like the aroma rising from a pit toilet. This guy is now going to take a crash course in athletics, more specifically the high jump.

How do these guys get licenses? I had to pay about $3000.00 plus a few weeks of driving around with a bad breath instructor and took a test. A Marine in Okinawa has 3000 to waste on that?

The SOFA agreement means that US personnel can get home state driver's license translated into a SOFA driving permit. They don't need to take any sort of test to get one of these, nor jump through any of the hoops US civilians do. They also get deep discounts on road tax and shaken.

This wouldn't even be news-worthy if the guy weren't a US marine. I agree he should be punished according to Japan law, but no more severe than anyone else. Now, that being said, he WILL get that punishment as well as a good heap of pain from the US military as well. THAT cannot be helped, since I believe they take a very serious view on their members' conduct off-base in Japan, but methinks this guy is taking on the brunt of anger from people who are against the US military presence, and not just being punished for his crimes.

Guy is an idiot and I hope he gets burned. I don't know what's wrose, this marine or the morons who are now calling for a cerfew/lock down because of the actions of one marine. As smithinjapan said, this would just be another everday hit and run if the guy wasn't a marine.....I hate the way things are blown out of proportion just to make headlines.

Sadly, having been there and I am sure a couple people in here are too, know that everyone gets punished together. Experienced it a bunch of times. Never did anything wrong, but one person screws up, everyone pays the price. Maybe the Air Force base and the Army base will have a stand down or whatever, but the Marine bases are going to be affected, no doubt about it.

Another of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children does a no-no. Every serviceman in Japan lives under the microscope of the general public, mostly as gaijin. But much more so since they wear a military uniform. Spotless living is required as the minimum. It's easier to be Brittney Spears and drive around without panties. He's is deep doo-doo, as previously stated, and the US military services all get another black eye. Shogannai!
