One might also speculate since the Police have been reluctant to release a steady flow of information (like they usually do) that maybe they just now releasing this so called request for prints now show progress or to get the press to stop hounding them for new info. The JN Police have had access to the POI since Saturday. After questioning him, you'd think that getting a set of prints there on the spot in the brig would help them (JN Police) to confirm or eliminate him as a suspect. Why wait 3 1/2 days later. I just think they feeding this stuff (News)piece meal to the press.
Japan seems to have a large amount of problems from the US military compared to news I read from other parts of the world. Perhaps it is too easy to get into trouble in Japan with all the booze and broads.
"I would think a better way would be for the Japanese police to provide the base with the fingerprints they find and they can watch the base fingerprint Ugbogu to see if they match. This way there will be no finger pointing(no funny business intended) or saying the evidence could have been planted or anything and both sides will find out together."
Very good point...
I seriously doubt that they will do that though, it makes too much sense.
It's not like this Nigerian guy is going to change his finger prints...
Of course his prints will be all over the back seat of the taxi and most assuredly 'his' credit card, but if he truly didn't have anything to do with this guy's murder, they shouldn't be on the knife...common sense.
I'm betting this guy is guilty as the day is long.
But innocent until proven guiltily, or is it the other way around here in japan...
If the US navy had questioned him about the murder immediately and pulled in the police at the same time, then we might have got somewhere and this thing would not have dragged on for so long.
Do they (the US navy) not know what his involvement is yet ?
I hope that NCIS and the Japanese forensics team work together because a false conviction exemplifies the questionable science, flawed analysis and shoddy lab practices that sometimes undermine the quest for justice.
Hopefully, The truth will come out and if the sailor is innocent then give him restriction and work to make him a productive part of our great Navy.
The Navy pick him up on Saturday morning around 4am, and he was brought back to the brig where the Police in Yokosuka were able to speak with him immediately.

The navy picked him up on Saturday yet today is Tuesday and all we have heard are navy quotes about him not being questioned about the murder and his only being questioned for desertion.
Has the question about whether he knows anything about the murder been asked of him by the navy and if it has, why has his answer (whether no or yes) not been published ?
There seems to be an awful lot of silence at the moment and not enough questions being asked and answered by him.
This in turn creates rumour and suspicion.
Yes, I can see how that might be confusing. Police aren't saying much. But the Navy is just playing damage control by making the statement it did. But don't you think that since the press is most likely pressuring the police for answers, the police would give an answer if they had one? Fact is they seem t be treating this same way they treated the alleged rape case in Okinawa. When they don't have any evidence they stay quiet. In the past when they have evidence or a link, the police is always quick to show the press. I would bet that they are questioning all the guys supposed friends or anyone who shares his nationality in Tokyo, and Yokosuka.
As far as why he is only being questioned by the Navy for his desertion. One the Japan Police take jurisdiction of the murder case, and two they really don't the US help in this case as far as questioning a suspect. They are pretty good at it.
Nigerians are synonymous with scams and other underground activities here in Japan, Italy and the states. I think this is needs to be wrapped up quickly cause the media circus and damage control is just ridiculous.
If you may allow me to speculate, I do not think this navy dude did actually kill the cab driver. Unless if he really has some lose nuts in his brains which would equal him to these latest scumbags on killing sprees across Japan.
I do not know this guy but my theory would be during his desertion from the base, I think this dude went firting with someone else's woman. That someone probarbly found out and planned to frame him up to revange. Taking advantage of the current problems surrounding the military personel, the formula could have been, access to material that would be used as evidence, location that would make it look more probable and execute. With an intention to have him put away for good.
This is not at all like a rape, sexual assualt or most other crimes. In those, there is a victim that can speak about what happened, so forth and so on.
A murder victim simply can't do that. The evidence has to speak for him, and sometimes that simply takes time to process. Not everything is as simple as 1+1=2.
I'm quite sure that NCIS is asking all the right questions. I'm also sure that the Jcops are involved to ensure things go the way the Japanese law enforcement thinks it should (without assessing innocence or guilt without evidence).
Law enforcement officials, unlike some on this board, simply can't go with the "gut" feeling. The fact that "Nigerians are known for scams, etc...", or that a sexual assualt case was over in 4 days has absolutely ZERO bearing on a murder investigation, the methods, or the probabilities. It takes EVIDENCE. NCIS and the Jcops are not gonna hide anything from each other, or the public. Once they have something to say, they will.

The local Okinawa police were anything BUT quiet. They leaked info about the alleged rape to the press almost the same day it happened. You can never compare Okinawa to anyhwhere else in Japan. Different air -- different culture -- different way of perceiving the world.

Only among those who thrive on rumors and suspicion. Lets see where the investigation takes us, shall we?
