"Throw the book at him because he should have learned tolerance in the military like doing what you’re told by a superior."
That's not tolerance... that's obedience. And no matter what we teach them, we have them for a whopping few months (sometimes less) before they do stupid crap. And in that time, you want us to undo 18+ years of bad parenting?
Here's the point. Raised in Ghetto, Manhatten or suburbia. It matters not WHERE you were raised. It is HOW you are raised. Proper parenting when it occurs, even in the ghettos... heck ESPECIALLY in the ghettos, will result in young adults that know how to behave.

The best thing that ever happened to the military in Okinawa is Gen Zimer's order to stop them from drinking downtown and imposing a curfew of 2200 hrs. He is the only one to do the job right. I hope the curfew stays in effect or if it relaxes doesn't exceed 2400 hrs.

The sailor who was a minor at age 19" Can't believe that...thought they would make an exception to the rule.
Anyway, this story has been going on for a while. On JT it was reported that the guy got caught up in a fight with the girls.. now it seems different.
Alphaape at 04:09 PM JST - 29th March
skipthesong, I have met some of the parties that were involved in this incident. And here is the bottom line, these girls were what one could classify as a "honch runner" here in Yokosuka. Their only ambition was to hang out with as many sailors as possible, go to the same clubs in Yokosuka/Yokohama every weekend, and screw the same guys as long as they could get on the base to go to the Exchange, or Taco Bell. Not to be too harsh, but they were basically troublesome types who thought that they knew all there is to know about hanging with black guys, and how to get people in trouble because they thought they knew how to hold the spectre of "reporting you to shore patrol" over someone's head.
Don't get me wrong, even if they acted this way, that is still no reason for them to be stabbed, that should never be condoned at all. He should have known better than to let a situation get out of hand and resort to violence against women. But, all parties in this situation where up to no good. The house they were staying in belonged to another guy who happened to be out at sea and he let the younger girl stay there. She brings the older woman along and while he is out to sea, it is a party place where they can bring different guys (in this case the accused) over for after parties.
The life style these females lived, is one of the reasons why this has not been in the forefront of the press, just like in the Okinawa case. If these had been merely innocent women like in the mall stabbings, this would still be front page news fodder.

I've met sailors and soldiers, in fact, had family members who were career military. What they have told me without exception is that guys like this are the exception, not the rule, to those in uniform.

Blue Tiger... they were correct. It is a very VERY small percentage of military members that do anything like this. It seems like so much more here in Japan because of the press that any military crime gets. One is too many, that I agree with, but on a day when a military person does something stupid, and some Japanese does the exact same thing, you'll hear about the military guy a lot sooner, a lot more, and most will automatially assume he's guilty (and most that you hear about probably are!).

There are many men and women who VOLUNTARILY join the military because they want to serve their country. They come from all walks of life. Saying that they come from poor homes, or with no choices in life, is an ignorant statement. I personally know many who gave up all the niceties in life to serve. These young people I speak of are all very intelligent, and would have done well in any path they had chosen. They chose the military!

Er, like....all of then.
VoXman at 01:29 PM JST - 30th March
I think it would do a lot of good for all the shut-ins here in Japan if they joined the military. Least they would get out of the house.

Nessier and peggy1,
Not everyone joins the military for the sole reason of serving thier country. For many, it is the best option for them to become naturalized citizens of the US and it provides a great many benifits that they may not have otherwise. Granted, they do have other life options, but the military provides them with a much better life. How they choose to live their life is up to them and unfortunately a lot of younger kids make some pretty big mistakes without thoughts of implications to themselves or the rest of the world as a whole.
peggy1 at 11:51 PM JST - 30th March
Thank you for clearing that up, hothead. I realize they are all voluntary. Perhaps I should have capitalized the WANT TO SERVE THEIR COUNTRY. My intentions were to point out that, although there are some who are in the military to escape or find a better way of life, most enlist to serve their country because of their patriotism.
hothead at 07:59 AM JST - 31st March
peggy1,
Amazing, you must know everyone in the military or have done an extensive amount of research to know that. I have served for over 20 years and have found and know your results to be totally untrue. I wish they were true, but patriotism unfortunaltely is not what drives our young men and women to join the armed services in most cases. If you honestly feel that way, I am so sorry.
sukebeoyagi at 12:12 PM JST - 31st March
Hothead, what are some of the main drivers from your perspective?
hothead at 03:58 PM JST - 31st March
sukebeoyaqi,
I have heard many reasons for joining the military from not having anything better going for them, needing money to go to college, traveling the world, trying to stay out of trouble with civil authorities and even patriotism. I am not saying that there are no service members that joined because the felt it was the patriotic thing to do, but they are a lot fewer than one might think.

i am sorry but i think your wrong. The majority of teen Americans that join the service don't give a flying fk about serving their country. Most of them are only interested in the health benefits, and college money they hope to gain when they are done.
i would like to know how may of those so called "patriotic" teens actually stay for a term longer than required because they "love" their country so much.
@topic: considering the conviction rate in Japan, i sure hope that they prosecute him here, and receives a nice prison sentence.
