Wife arrested for killing cheating husband with coffee cup

TOKYO —

A 61-year-old housewife battered her 70-year-old husband to death with a coffee cup after discovering he was cheating on her, reports said Monday.

The woman allegedly attacked her husband after learning of his affair, battering him repeatedly about the face and head with the mug at their home in Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Sunday afternoon, the Asahi Shimbun and other media reported.

Yasuo Hirose, an honorary professor with Yokohama National University, was taken to hospital but later confirmed dead.

“He had an affair with a woman I hate,” Emiko Hirose told police, according to the reports. “I went mad and hit him more than 10 times with a cup.”

Kanagawa Prefectural police said Monday that the charge was upgraded to one of murder.

That must have been one hell of a coffee cup. I can't imagine she thought she'd kill him. I mean, if she'd really decided to kill him - they're at home, with knives and blunt heavy objects. Who would turn to crockery as their first choice of weapon? Her actions speak to loss of control due to rage, not intent to kill.

Old goat! Having an affair at 70! wWth a women that his wife knew. Think it must be manslaughter, not murder.

She hit him cause he was having an affair with a woman she hated? What if he was having an affair with a woman she liked? Would that have made a difference?

I guess she woke up and smelled the coffee and then beat him with the cup. She would have been lots better off just leaving the guy.

All these comments about old guys having sex and dirty old men etc, you need to understand just because some one is elderly doesnt mean they are celibate and have no desires. Many old people lead active sex lives and it might surprise you to find out that lots of people in their 80s are still getting it on. Don't be jealous coz they getttin more than you.

“He had an affair with a woman I hate,”

I guess then it would have been fine if he was having an affair with a woman she approved of. Curious to know, there have been numerous articles on JT on sexless marriages, and I wonder if this was one of them. If so, then why should she be concerned with whom the husband was having sex with. To me, this woman is just plain selfish. As long as she gets what's hers and she does her own thing, he can do what he wanted. But I guess he crossed the line when he slept with someone she knew. My guess, it probably was a person she knew very well and had a long history with. She probably bad mouthed her husband long enough, and this lady knew just what to say to him to get it going. Just speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went along those lines.

    minello7

Justin Everett-- dirty old man ? You mean you have an age limit in your mind when one should give up sex or would if have been okay, if say a woman of the same age was having an affair, or would she be classed as a dirty old woman. Every day on this earth is a gift, so if you can manage to participate in pleasures of the sexual variety into your twilight years , why not. Why do people assume that once you reach retirement age, thats it, put them out to grass, no longer any use, passed the sell by date. Well I got news for you !!!

Scary. That had to have been a gruesome scene to rival any TV murder show. How much rage would you need to be feeling to batter an old geezer to death with a coffee cup. I mean that's the sort of stuff teenage soccer hooligans do to one another after consuming copious amounts of alcohol. But for a sixty year old to go that mental? Wow ... really makes you think.

    A lot.

Suppose he decided in his 50s that there was no need to bother at home anymore (I know of several JJ marriages where it's the husband who's pulled the plug, not the wife) and then after 20 years of cooking his meals and pouring his tea while there's nothing, nada, zilch in the bedroom, she finds out he's not only been playing away, but playing away with someone she can't stand. There would be a lot of rage there, and a cup would be an appropriate weapon. Not that I approve, but I can imagine the situation.

    Sensato

Although I am in no way defending this man's adultery, his actions certainly do not justify his wife's physical abuse and ultimate murder of her husband. This was a clear-cut homicide.

I always sense a double standard in the reader comments when a perpetrator is female and the victim of the crime is male, rather than vice versa.

If the headline had instead read, "Husband arrested for killing cheating wife with coffee cup", I suspect the comments would have reflected much more empathy toward the woman, and hang-him-high outrage toward the murderer.

Who knows what happened between these three people? Was she otherwise the perfect wife, or did she set him on the path to affairs all by herself? Did they both play an equal role? We will never know.

Not that it matters. Your genitals are your own people, even in a marriage. If you can't handle that fact, don't get married. If you do get married and find out this clearly that your partner's genitals are not your property, get a divorce.

For you see, marriage is not about sex. Its about taking care of one another. Its about a brother/sister sort of love primarily, which is why get brothers and sister's in law, and your partner's parents become your parents in law. Romance is great and all, but its nothing to base a marriage on because it does not last. Jealously is for the birds, and jail birds like this one. Affairs, in moderation, are not the problem. Selfish jealousy is, expecting them to never happen.

Your genitals are your own people

Genitals aren't people, they're bits. Important bits, but still just bits.

Its about a brother/sister sort of love

I've got two brothers. My relationship with my husband has never been and will never be anything like my relationship with my brothers. Ditto for him and his sister.

Romance is great and all, but its nothing to base a marriage on because it does not last.

Yes it does. If you're lucky. And if you both work at it.

Affairs, in moderation, are not the problem.

Maybe not the problem, but definitely a problem. Because marriage is based on trust, and how can you trust someone who thinks nothing of betraying you and the vows s/he made to you?

Selfish jealousy is, expecting them to never happen.

No, expecting them never to happen is natural if you trust your partner, give them no reason to go hunting outside the marriage bed, and assume that your partner understands what keeping you only unto him/her means.

Good words, Cleo. Marriage is romance. Otherwise it's just a friendly partnership, and we can get enough of those in business. If any of you males think differently, take a single flower home to your wife or girlfriend every day and find out what a simple romantic gesture gets you.

I dont think this is murder either, as people have pointed out she would have had a choice of weapons at home guaranteed to do the job if that was her intention.

You've got to be kidding me. So she chose a weapon of convenience, big deal. By her own statement she hit the old guy "more than ten times". There must have been blood everywhere. Parts of his skull probably got bashed in. Sit and think for a minute about what it would mean to take a coffee cup to someone's head and then keep on doing it at least nine more times even after you saw the result it was having. She murdered this guy plain as day.

And cleo .... your scenario is perfectly plausible. But so is Alphaape's further up. Regardless, this woman can't possibly have had a lot of love for her husband. She took five minutes and methodically beat him to death.

I don't know. It's a very, very short trip wire between love and hate; the stronger the love, the stronger the hate when it's betrayed, in some cases (not all, I'll grant you). It could be that there was no love left between them and his actions were just the last straw. We don't know.

Some women may be on the woman's side because the husband cheated.

Yes it does. If you're lucky. And if you both work at it.

So not only do you have to be lucky, even if you are, you have to work to maintain romance?

Look, every time I have had romance it required no force of will to keep it going. And if I apply force of will and find out I am not one of the lucky ones, then what?

My impression of your advice is that it amounts to fighting the wind and for no good purpose. This man may well have gone with his only available option. Even having an affair but staying married might have been a massive gift to his post-menopausal wife. And since she beat him in rage over an affair, I think I have some pretty good grounds to doubt that she is the one who deserves any pity here.

Nothing wrong with a marriage that is a friendly partnership, any more than there is anything wrong with a marriage that is an eternal romance, as few of those as I have seen. Point is, another's genitals never become your property, not even by marriage contract. Deal with it, but never by murder.

    @Justin

Quite apart from your obvious ageism and prejudice, you ignore that fact this his wife was obviously a violent woman (if you kill somebody in a rage, you're a violent person.) She may have been violent and abusive for many years, with no physical intimacy between them. So he sought intimacy elsewhere. Good for him, but bad luck for marrying a psycho in the first place.

  • 1

    AustPaul

ChibaChick, what has the choice of weapons/items at home got to do with it? She made a decision, grabbed whatever was at hand and committed the act.

At the end of the day she admitted hitting him more than 10 times with a cup and killing him. I'm sure she had the foresight of consequence on that one.

  • -2

    darknuts

  • 0

    cleo

So not only do you have to be lucky, even if you are, you have to work to maintain romance?

Yes. It's so, so easy to take love for granted, and when you do romance withers.

if I apply force of will and find out I am not one of the lucky ones, then what?

What you do then is up to you. Either you stick it out and make the best of what you have, or you throw in the chips and move on. Or you do your own thing while nominally staying in the old relationship, maybe not notifying your partner of the change in the arrangements, and apparently risk being informed of her opinion of your behaviour in the form of a coffee cup.

'If you have to work at it it ain't real' is a fallacy. Anything worth having is worth working for.

  • -2

    ChibaChick

Since you are a girl, if this didn't involve a cheating husband, would you consider it murder?

Im not "on her side". I think what she did was appalling. But did she intend to kill him? That is the test of murder. Did she lie in wait for him to come home? If so, she would probably not have picked a coffee cup to do the job with. Im surmising then that she found out suddenly on the spot and the coffee mug was the first thing to hand - ergo no pre-meditation. If her actions were then an overreaction to the sudden news she could quite easily be charged with a lesser crime of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. So as the police ARE charging her with murder they clearly have more info not contained in the article that suggests a murder charge will stick, but based on the info above, I dont see it. Hence why I dont think it is murder - unless more info comes to light later.

Would I consider it muder if the roles were reversed? No. Because my opinion has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with the actions taken by the victim based on the info above. Would I consider it murder if it hadnt involved a cheating husband? Well, as I said above, it would depend on the cirumstances: lie in wait with the mug - probably murder. Sudden reaction to something or self-defense - not necessarily murder. But Im not a lawyer. Just my opinion.
