Police in Soka, Saitama Prefecture, said Saturday they have arrested a 32-year-old woman for fatally abusing her 3-year-old stepdaughter.

Police said they received a call from the suspect, Mariko Fukushima, at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, in which she said her stepdaughter Maika was suffering from convulsions. NTV reported that the girl was rushed to hospital but died later that afternoon.

Police said that during questioning, Fukushima admitted that she pushed Maika violently to the floor because she had become irritated.

Police said Fukushima had been living with Maika and her father since March and are questioning Fukushima about whether she had abused her stepdaughter on other occasions.

Oh, Saitama, you haven't your sorrows to seek.

Quite a few years in a prison cell aught to help her with the anger management issue.

What a ridiculous comment. The hugely overwhelming ridiculously large number of kids here have loving parents who would never hurt them, much less murder them. For your statement to make sense, half or more of kids would need to be being murdered by their parents.

Sad case. Anyone commenting here should be wise enough to know that child abuse happens in any country in the world. There are severe cases to deal with whether its Japan, the US, Denmark, Italy, Nigeria, or wherever. What needs to be done is have more attentive children protection services, and neighbors who does the necessary reporting if they witness or suspect cases of child abuse. Even with a lot of attention to the issue, you still cannot eliminate child abuse from happening. Many parents might have symptoms of mental problems or frustrations that they let out on the defenceless child.

Although I appreciate and agree with your comment, in fact there are not "ridiculously large numbers of kids" in Japan, and probably won't be for some time. In other words, if Japan is such a great place for kids and their supposedly loving parents, then why are there so few of them?

Japan will increasingly become a nation of old people.

I think it already is!

Yeah, it's not like there are millions of children in this country.

...oh wait. Yes there are.

Now regardless of how you are incorrect with that, you are misquoting me anyways. I didn't say 'there are ridiculously large number of kids', I said "The hugely overwhelming ridiculously large number of kids here". My comment spoke to a percentage of the existing children, your misquote was saying that I was speaking of the overall number of children.

In other words, if Japan is such a great place for kids and their supposedly loving parents, then why are there so few of them?

For many reasons, most of which have zero to do with whether parents are loving or not, and mostly have to do with the economic reality of raising children in this country.

Right now, about 25% of Japan's population is over 65. In about 50 years, it will be 40%.

Sad! What has become of Japan? Why destroy your future? You don't have enough kids to take the country into the days ahead!!! "RIP lil girl, your precious life gone to soon!" My heart to her!!!

In order for his statement to make sense it doesn't require half or more of the kids to be murdered much less assaulted by their parents. His statement could also be implying that even if the kids do make it from happy houses that the economic realty of this country is going to be so bad in a few decades that the quality of life for the current generation of kids is going to be so poor because Japan is going to become a nation of old people and just to add on to their misery and reduce quality of life every now and then you will hear of a child being abused or killed.

Dateline "Saitama". We see that way too often compared to other datelines.

What happened to the child's mother? This vile woman took a life and ruined that of the child's father and mother. In any country there are terrible people who hurt children, and Japan, on the whole is a country which puts a lot of love and care into its' young people. I pray that justice is done in this awful case.
