Yet another freak killing their offspring. Why? What the hell is wrong with these people? And, why is it so common in Japan?

Why is it so common in Japan?

I don't imagine it's any more common here than elsewhere. It's often the case that when a particular crime is less common, it has greater news value and the increased coverage tends to lead people to think that it's a huge problem.

Actually infanticide in Japan has fallen quite dramatically from a high of 207 babies killed in 1970 to 27 in 2005. There have been similar falls in the numbers of schoolchildren killed. http://kangaeru.s59.xrea.com/G-baby.htm (In Japanese, but the graph is pretty clear.)

http://edition.cnn.com/US/9706/27/killed.babies/index.html The number of infants killed has remained relatively constant since 1990, ranging from a high of 304 in 1991 to 249 in 1995

Seriously messed up woman. Hard to understand what went on in her head without more information.

And, why is it so common in Japan?

This site does not represent all events that happen or happened in Japan. Not even close. Never assume this site is a reliable indicator of what happens in Japan or elsewhere. Its not. Not even statistics are perfect, and news articles never have enough of them.

Child enslavement and murder happen often enough in all other countries. We've just stopped reporting most of them - it gets old after some time. In a population of millions, you're "bound" to get these people.

There are so many of these cases Child welfare services are bombarded under the paperwork of it all these children fall through the wayside. Being a woman who couldn't have children I will never understand how you can harm someone that depends on you so much.

Cleo i assume that are only the official figures. I can not comprehend that these kine off people have no respect for human life and only see it as troublesome.

  • ambrosia at 05:41 PM JST - 8th December

Cleo: You may be right about the rates of infanticide being about the same here as most places but it's hard to say that with any certainty since Japan has one of the lowest rates of autopsy in the industrialized world.

What do you think the odds of this case being labeled as mother being mentally sick? These poor children that die needlessly because the parent has no time or use for them. She is another canidate to be sent to prison or enjoy the death penalty.

This woman needs help and should be under the shrink for long time. I don't believe that she is aware of what she is doing. Good question is where are fathers of these babies? Shrink will be happy to find out what is in her head.

  • borscht at 08:26 AM JST - 9th December

    BBLeo,

where are fathers of these babies?

They could be home with their families, back in the bar, at work. They could also be unaware Ms Ouchi was ever pregnant.
