9 Comments

A 49-year-old woman walking home suffered a broken right arm after she was knocked down by a man trying to steal her handbag in Tokyo's Nakano Ward, police said Sunday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 1 a.m. Saturday in Matsugaoka. Sankei Shimbun reported that the woman was pushed down from behind by a man whom she did not know. The man tried to grab her handbag but the woman held on tight and the man fled empty-handed.

Police said the woman suffered a broken arm that will take about a month to heal.

The assailant is described as being young, with brown hair and was dressed in white. Police are examining street surveillance camera footage to try and identify the man.

POS opportunist. Glad he left empty-handed. Crooks target the low hanging fruit, soft targets. It's not very different whether thieves, robbers, or murderers.

Would've been cool if she happened to be carrying pepper spray and gave a massive dose to both his eyes.

Japan is safe, but won't a few women on a 1am stoll consider a small cylindrical can in their purse/pocket if they had the choice?

I believe pepper spray is illegal here.

A handful of "Shichimi" works just fine too.

These days, it's dangerous for even a man to be outside by himself late at night. At midnight, I actually walk down the "main street" not walk into the "alley" as much as possible when I have to go out to the convenience-store in my local. Let alone the 49-year-old woman walking at around "1 a.m."

At any rate, she ended up paying an arm and a leg for the medical costs of the injury. If that's the case, then she has really taken a one-two punch. That said, she didn't get her handbag stolen was only blessed relief. And the game was not worth the candle for the assailant.

Anyway, I hope the woman will get healed up soon.

Except that it's not. Tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of men are outside by themselves every night in this country without incident.

@Strangerland

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, I know what you mean. I have actually been doing a bar hopping and such for a quite a while. But, in the above field, I talked about "walking in the dark" at night alone, say, getting back to your house after drinking late at night or wee hours.
