A 41-year-old woman was robbed of approximately 700,000 yen in cash as she cycled home in Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture, police said Tuesday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Fuji TV reported that the woman, who runs a beauty salon, was carrying the day's proceeds in a bag as she rode home.

The woman told police that two men on a motorcycle came up behind her. One man grabbed her bag and then they sped off.

According to the woman, the two men were in their 20s, police said.

She should pay a little more attention.

Glad the she was not injured ... 700,000 yen day proceed is too much for a beauty salon ..!!

Wouldn't be a JT thread without someone blaming the victim.

4 ( +18 / -15 )

No more details? No witnesses? I'll reserve judgement on whether there even is a 'victim' to blame.

700,000 in cash! I need to open a beauty salon

More details. if she is making 700k a day running a beauty salon I want to go into partnership with her and open a chain of them.

Strangerland: "Wouldn't be a JT thread without someone blaming the victim."

She's only a victim in part -- and where would we be without you suggesting otherwise? How many times do we have to hear about people carrying HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of yen in cash on them being robbed before people start smartening up? Since they just "sped up and grabbed the bag" I'm willing to bet it was the usual bag in the front basket, unprotected. True, they could have nabbed it off her shoulder, but it would have said as much, no doubt, and I never see people riding with handbags or shoulder bags on one shoulder because they slide down onto the arm (and in that case would still have to be ripped away from her).

No one's NOT blaming the criminals, who seem to have targeted her, Strangerland, but that doesn't mean you don't point out how unwise it is to carry large amounts of cash on you any less than you would point out someone who left their front door wide open and came home to find stuff stolen shouldn't be surprised.

She wasn't on her way to deposit it, she was on her way home -- with that much cash. And before you defend her and say the banks were closed or that she had no choice but to carry it home and wait until the next day, how much do you want to bet she'll find a way to never be in that position again (and hence, it could have been prevented in the first place)?

Maybe it's was easy to rob 700000 yen from the woman

1 ( +2 / -1 )

SmithinJapan:

That's a really great argument on why it's OK to blame the victims in such incidents. Thanks for the insight.

Wow!; guess where I used to live.

I won't get into the whole question of why she was carrying Yen 700,000 with her and the wisdom of it. A different discussion, although I note I once had to carry a bag with Yen 10 million from the bank to a government office in order to make a payment related to a company registration / license matter. And had no choice, because they only accepted cash over the counter!

However, does anyone think it was just a random robbery, with the assailants just randomly targeting her and getting lucky in getting a bag with that much money in it?? I mean, there are incidents where robbers will target women carrying purses/bags randomly, I know, but this has much more of the feel of an "inside" job. Meaning the assailants somehow knew that she had a bag with this much cash in it.

I normally don't speculate, but that was just my immediate reaction.

According to the woman, the two men were in their 20s, police said.

Given a recent spate of youth crimes like this one, they seem to commit robberies just for fun.

Hopefully, the police round up all bad guys involved in these muggings. Otherwise they gonna act as they please and keep robbing further at this rate.

It's not blaming the victim to point out her incaution.

700,000 yen day proceed is too much for a beauty salon ..!!

She's meeting a demand. It's not for us to say whether it's too much or too little. If you think it's easy money, go ahead and try it yourself.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

It also depends very much on the size of the salon. There's one round the corner from my office that has a dozen seats - and staff - , which seem to be permanently filled. 700,00 wouldn't be at all far fetched for that place. There's also every chance that "day's takings" actually means several days takings.

No indication how big the business is - she might have to pay salaries out of that. Or, since Tuesday is usually the day beauty salons are closed, she could have been taking the week's takings home. The article says the day's takings, but Fuji TV, where the report originated, makes no mention of how many days' takings it is (not that JT would go in for sloppy translations, noooo). A dozen ladies a day each having a perm and colouring would easily come to that much in a week.

I disagree. Have you checked the prices in some of those places? They're outrageous. When we see the clerks saying goodbye/arigatou to their customers at the door, My wife and I often joke that they're saying things like "Thank you for paying way too much for that haircut. Thank you for spending so much just to have some "Exile-looking" guy chat with you while he colors your hair. Thank you for paying for my car, etc., etc."

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Wouldn't be a JT thread without someone blaming the victim.

But you've got to admit that she isn't being very smart to transport Y700,000 by bicycle. Even in what you often refer as "safer" Japan. But other than that, yes of course she is the victim here...

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Like I said, I want a piece of that esthe salon action. I'm good with nails and hair. Sounds like either an inside job or she is making the whole thing up.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I remember being in a post office in Toyohashi, Aichi about thirty years ago and listening to the clerk count out (at about 120 decibels) 1,300,000 yen and hand it to a gentleman who looked to be about 80 yrs. old. I thought at the time all someone would have to do is follow him out, knock him in the head, and grab his stash. It was very irresponsible of the clerk to do business that way, I thought.

Tip: QB Cut House. 1000 yen. They're all over.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

If my shop was making ¥700,000 a day I wouldn't be carrying it home late at night on a bicycle! I'd be driving a car with the doors locked!

Came up behind her, grabbed her bag, sped off, and she still had the where-with-all to be able to tell how old the perps were?

Hmmm....

Thanks Nessie, but I use a place called Super Cuts, also for 1,000 yen (plus tax). My wife on the other hand...well, let's just say every time she goes to a salon (not always the same one) it's like going to a used car dealership, you have to go through negotiations first to set the total before you sit down.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

But you've got to admit that she isn't being very smart to transport Y700,000 by bicycle.

I think it's not a great idea. But I still don't place the blame on her.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Strangerland - You miss the point again. No one put the blame on her. Only correctly pointed out her foolishness in carrying that kind of cash around openly enough for these two kids to know.

Common sense.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Beauty salons can take in that and more in one day - but customers often pay for tickets to be used over a period of time, so it's not really "made" in one day. They earn it over several weeks / months.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Contradicting your first sentence with your second.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Contradicting your first sentence with your second.

Wrong again. Simply stating the obvious in that the incident could have been avoided had she used common sense.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

In the U.S. it would be nearly impossible to find someone carrying about $7000 riding a bicycle. With perhaps a drug dealer too young to have a D/L yet being an exception. Japan is so far backwards in it's holding on to "cash" culture that incidents like this occur. In the USD the perps would have only gotten an ATM card that would have been cancelled immediately.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Looks like she's running a fairly successful beauty salon to take in Y700,000.

Ummm every ghetto. 9mm in their back pocket too.

Back on topic though, why has nobody jumped in with the old "It was a set-up for insurance!!"

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Well if she can't make it to the bank on time regularly, I guess that for a fraction of that she could invest in a a safe, eh?

Or perhaps have one of those security services come pick up the dosh for a small fee?

Or am I blaming the victim by suggesting she use her noggin?

No. That is because I never said anything about supporting the thieves, cause I don't. They should go to jail the same as if they did this only got 7,000 yen or 7,000,000.

She was stupid. But she should still get her money back. So no, not blaming the victim. Just pointing out her stupidity.

It was completely her fault. It wasn't random. Someone was watching or a little less than honest employee tipped off friends.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

¥700,000- that's a good amount of money (for me anyway)! I'd like to know more...

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Beauty salons have older customers who dye their hair from white to dark hair (maybe black in Japan) More expensive than perma only as Dyes are addition to perma and cut. Older people need to go salons at least once in a month. She probably is owner of salon.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

If only one day's takings, not much to cry over, if she's the owner.

But google translate indicates she "ran" the place, or was "management". If not owner, she might be looking for a new job, if they don't catch the perps. Even thought it ought to be the owner's responsibility to get the money transferred.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Jugyo-ryo. Even the guy with a takoyaki yatai knows better how to deal with his register.

You just get half of your hair done like Jennifer Aniston's for that price.

You want to be chain-robbed of bags of cash ?

Hmmm..."Beauty salon", that should be, me thinks...!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This was probably not the first time she did that and that is why she was robbed. Inside job is very likely. It is also possible it wads just bad luck. Wrong place, wrong time. She would not have been the first woman robbed in this manner.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I guess for some (posters) ¥700,000 is chump change. (Lol) Anyway people need to be careful to carry large amounts of money around...even in "safety" Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Unlikely to be a random robbery. Either it is, as others said, "an inside job" or the place was scouted out beforehand - meaning that one of the customers was probably in on it!

What I don't understand is where the woman would be taking the money at that time of night. Surely better to leave the cash in the office safe over the weekend, and take it to the bank on Monday morning? Or, better still, if the daily takings are really that much (I think that is more likely to be the weekly takings), why not have one of these security firms take the money to the bank for you?

Woman robbed of Y700,000 while cycling home

Why carry that much around in the first place? Clearly the thief knew who to target

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Oh my god. I usually leave my keys in the ignition, bag on the seat and my car unlocked when I go to the combini. What has the world come to?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Most likely she was taking the days pay to deposit the next day not uncommon.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Most likely she was taking the days pay to deposit the next day not uncommon.

Possibly, but it doen't explain why she felt the need to take the money home. If she had time to pay the money in on Saturday, then she had time to collect it from the shop.

Probably she has been used to carry money this way quite a while. Kind hard to change a habit.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She could have been on her way to a combini ATM to deposit the money. In any case, this is a rather weird argument. It is perfectly possible for someone to be foolish/careless and also a victim.
