Woman runs over man who was apparently victim of earlier hit-and-run

TOCHIGI —

A 69-year-old man was killed after a hit-and-run on Wednesday night in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture. According to police, a 37-year-old woman reported to police that she had run over a man who was lying on the road at 5:45 p.m. Police found Sadao Gunji, suffering from severe injuries. He died about one hour later in hospital.

Police said the victim had already been run over by another car before being hit by the woman’s car. Police have not charged the woman and are searching for the other car.

How more people don't die on the rodas here is a mystery. Combination of bad driving and relative gormlessness ought to be lethal. Or maybe I am missing something.

How did they know he had already been run over by 'another' car. There could also be a possibility more than two or maybe just one car was involved here.

I wonder how can he be hit by two cars without getting noticed. I am sure this accident didnt take place on a high speed National Highway. In my country if its within side the city, usually people get together near the spot.Helping the person out of the danger zone and giving him first aid. Which makes it impossible for the other car to fall into the same place. The roads in japan are wide enough to safely pass through an injured person lying helplessly within a road. This could easily be done if the other driver is driving with open eyes, without any consumption of alcohol and not driving very fast (i-e within side the city). That woman`s case should also be investigated, as to why she couldnt keep her car away from the victim. When she saw the man,Did she apply the emergency break or not? Applying breaks against something that suddenly comes in your way is the natural instinct of the drive, even its an object or an animal or a human being. That man could have been saved after getting injured by first car. He died because of the second hit? So if proved, the other driver should also be charged for negligence even though she reported the case to the police.

This guy was probably victim of neglect by family and friends. Now watch how they will come to court asking for apology money, etc, etc.

Couple of questions. First, says she "ran over him" not hit him. As in rolled over him. Which means at the very least, she wasn't looking in front of her. Cell phone? makeup? If you are driving like you should, you can't not miss some old guy lying in the road. And why was the poor guy lying there by himself? 5:45, nobody helps the guy out? And if she "ran over" the guy, how on earth did the police determine he was hit before, based only on her testimony? This story is missing information, and I don't believe this lady is not at least partially responsible for this guys death. This is horrible.

Hey Barfly08 and Nippon5 you are both wrong, I live here and from 7am - 9pm the best you can go is between 20-45 mph on L.A. Freeways (or for that matter most of Southern California). You might hit 100 mph between 10pm - 3am and that's if CAL-TRANS doesn't have one of their road projects going.

And once in awhile someone walks unto the Freeway and does get hit by serveral cars usually at night.

They SHOULD charge her with reckless driving!! They did it to another guy last year who hit someone lying in the road from a previous hit n run! The cops said at that time, if he was paying attention, he would have seen the guy lying in the road.

I fail to see why this woman is not being charged with the same thing!

5:45 is a time when it is most difficult to see this season. Not noticing a crumpled up guy (who was probably wearing either black or gray) until you have hit him is easy to do.

Narrow roads, high speeds, negligent drivers !

And careless pedestrians that get themselves hit by one car only to be hit again by another. Cannot forget about them. I dodge idiots like that regularly. I have seen dogs with more awareness of the danger of walking in front of a moving car. Driver's have a limited field of view and need time to stop. Pedestrians have it easy, and 99 percent of time when they get hit, it was their own negligence and carelessness that allowed it to happen. I have jumped over guard rails just to make sure I would not be hit by passing cars. It could not be easier for a pedestrian to get out the way, or never get in the way in the first place. Cars are pretty much set on certain courses. Yet, they usually get the blame. Insane.

-There are many roads where I live here that you could not get past a body in the street with a car. There was a dude dead in a street next to my mansion last year. Never found the person who hit him. For those interested, his legs were facing the wrong direction.

-Japanese people in general have bad natural radar when it comes to walking in front of dangerous things. That is why driving is so difficult here.

-RADAR= This is the key word. If you take one foreigner, and one Japanese person and put them on opposite ends of a soccer field and tell them to walk. With two to three minutes, the Japanese person will have run into the foreigner and say sumimasen and hold their hand to the back of their head. When I have relatives or friends visit, and they want to know what to expect of this wonderful place, I just say RADAR! They soon figure it out. I am good at both RADARS now though. SUMIMASEN
