Woman stabbed after being asked for directions near Yokohama station
YOKOHAMA —
A 31-year-old woman was stabbed in her side on Sunday after a man approached her and asked her for directions near the east exit of JR Yokohama station.
Police said the woman was on her way to a training seminar when the man approached her in an underground shopping arcade near Yokohama station at around 12.30 p.m., and asked her where a hotel was. The woman told him she didn’t know, and continued on her way. She was then stabbed from behind in her left side, the injury believed to have been inflicted by a knife with a 10-cm blade left at the scene. The man fled on foot and the woman called for help, police said.
The woman was taken to hospital and received several stitches for her wound which was around 1.5 cm deep. She described the assailant as around 30 years old with short wavy hair. He was wearing denim jeans and a dark jacket.

Spring time in Japan, hay fever, cherry blossoms and loonies coming out of hibernation. Sounds good, however, the fact is that these nutjobs are a year-round problem in this country.
Hope this woman recovers and the plod actually make an arrest. Don't hold much hope though given the vague description of the assailant. Also hope all the folks down in Yokohama take care with such a loony on the loose.

She most properly gave him the old wave off, but still no reason to get shanked. Agree with TokyoGas, open season has yet to close.

Had brown eyes and black hair. Love it. They should have video cameras out and about. Probably do. Then how does one find someone after he is identified?

I always pass through this side of the station. They have CCTV all around the place. Fishing out the culprit should not be difficult at all.

A sudden attack without any reason without any warning, a typical japanese crimenology.0

you don't carry a knife around quick draw style just in case you get snubbed. this fool was looking to stab somebody, this was just his excuse.
Glad she wasn't serioulsy injured, or killed.

I wonder if this attacker is also unemployed. Cops should speed up search and nab him before someone else get hurt.

Bet the hotel was within 10 meters. people in and around Tokyo (including Yokohama and Kawasaki) used to be kind and helpful. Typical Japanese. Now this true polite Japanese behavior, which made this country famous, has goes the way side of self important non-caring western style lifestyle.
This guy just went way over the edge.
Now if she would have just taken a few seconds to think.
I personally have helped more than 10 people over the last month in and around Shinjuku. The George Washington was in and several people were looking for Kabukicho and 3 were looking for BIC camera (The others were looking for Waldo Moive Heather) Being white westerners ask me for my assistance, after getting none from the local citizens.
So all of us Gaijin out there, let's not turn into the woman described here. Let's start helping each other. When you see someone wondering around with a helpless face on, let's do something interesting.... act more "typical Japanese" and ask them if they need help.
That is what kindness is.

Just to give some perspective, here in Honolulu we've had three totally random stabbings (two fatal, one very serious) in 6 months. All the suspects were unknown to the victims and all the incidents were totally unprovoked. Point being, in a city 1/30 the size of Tokyo, and a low crime rate, random violence happens with disturbing frequency. I don't think this is particular to Japan, but it's certainly sensationalized in Japan. These incidents speak more to general shortcomings in mental health public policy in many industrialized countries, rather than any cultural factors.

Perhaps this is just the evolution of humanity. The more we expand into areas we were not meant to be, in such great numbers, the more we see this rather sadistic behavior.
You folks aught to read Piercing by Ryo Murakami if you want to get a look at this developing psyche. It is about a Japanese dude who wakes up and finds himself holding an ice pick to his own child's skull. He then works on a plan to stab and torture some random person. He actually takes some time off of work to do it. Nice vacation.

Are you really trying to blame the victim for this? Really? You think that had she been nice and polite, he would have stabbed the next woman through who was too busy to stop and chat? Try again. The man was obviously looking to cut someone, he chose his target, got close to her by asking her directions, when her back was to him, he attacked, showing he is nothing more then a despicable coward.
Don't blame the vic!

Molenir,
I agree with your post. It had very little to do with the woman being unable to help him. It is possible she did not know the place he was looking or she may have caught danger vibes off him and just wanted to get away.
