Noticed one thing? The victim is always someone weak, helpless, too short, too think, girl, young aged, or so on. Never do you hear about a "real" man being attacked, or injured.
When there was the guy who assaulted a whole group of people with a knife, he only injured the girls (btw, what the hell were the boys doing? why not protect the girls?). Most victims are girls, or kids, or the attackers are at least 3:1...
A big help would be, if people could somehow protect themselves. Are gas-sprays forbidden in Japan? I know it sounds weird, but the right type, can knock out any of these jerks.
Weird..
I don't want to blame the poor victim, but I've lived in Japanese apartments and they aren't that difficult to break out of (or into).. I presume he wasn't under 24hr surveillance so why didn't he try to escape, or at least generate enough noise to alert the neighbours.
Were his hands and legs tied, mouth gagged, and body chained to a bed or something???

I think pepper spray or mace is available as are tazers and extending batons that fit in the palm of your hand. I've seen them in Akihorrible. Why they are not carried by every woman in this country is beyond me. The only people I have heard of using pepper spray have been criminals robbing people on trains.
Apparently it's not off topic to claim that 'The victim is always someone weak, helpless, too short, too think, girl, young aged, or so on. Never do you hear about a "real" man being attacked, or injured' but totally off topic to point out, with reports taken from JT over the past couple of weeks of adult males being stabbed, dismembered and thrown under trains, that that isn't the case at all.
Unless, of course, the definition of a 'real' man is one who never gets attacked or injured.

Shuudan (group) bullying (including fatal abuse) against weak or unique individuals is a favourite past-time of many Japanese since time immemorial. The biggest achievements made by such bullies ocurred is of course, during the early phase of the 2nd Sino-Japanese war and World War II. Events that would even shock the most hardcore SS Einsatzgruppen soldiers because shuudan bullying doesn't require faith in an established ideology to strike. If you are merely weak or different, that's good enough excuse to be attract a hiding or a bayonet through your chest.

I must have missed the news reports of hordes of bullies running around sticking bayonets in the chests of the weak and different. Maybe I'm watching the wrong news programmes - the ones that deal with current affairs, not 60-year-old history.
But that wasn't my point. I posted a reply (removed by the Mod for being 'off topic') to spotehun's claim that it is always someone weak, helpless, too short, too think, girl, young aged who is the victim, pointing out that there have been several - far too many - cases in recent weeks of adult men, people who are in no way weak, helpless, too short, too think, girl, young aged being stabbed to death or thrown under trains. It was removed by the Mod for being 'off topic'. I was objecting to the intemperate use of the word always, and the removal of my post while spodehun's ridiculous claim remains. I was also wondering aloud what a 'real' man is. Presumably not one who gets himself stabbed (or bayonetted).

That's a relief - Dobie and I can carry on being girlie! I wasn't ready to start being a real man.

I was wrong to have implied that Japanese culprits only victimise the weak . However I was saying that bullying in Japan happens much more frequently and brutally than one could observe from counting the instances and inquiring into the circumstance of bullying cases overseas. Yes, regular people are victimised on a regular basis but such events don't usually have the shock value comparable to that you might expect from the victimisation of the vulnerable. The press wants to sell stories and you got to remember JT is no different. As you entered this page you must've noticed the ads. Then again, if the same story does not follow an 18 year olf victim but a grown man of normal fortitude in his 30s who votes LDP and shoulders a 24 year mortgage it might still be a good read for a Nihonjin Sankei subscriber who can identify with the man based on his common features.

Actually I'm very good at not seeing ads. I have it down to a fine art.

Yes, I know. I have no quibble with that. My original post gave links to 5 or 6 reports of assault/murder cases (all taken from JT over the past couple of weeks) where the victim was an adult man, ie showing that spodehun's assertion that the victim is always weak is a false one. I'm not suggesting that no bullying goes on. Far from it.
I haven't personally seen very much bullying going on where I am in the inaka, more children and adults helping the weak or different. BUt thier is the historical precedent to be expected in group-oriented societies.
Perhaps its city life that is slowly detaching us all form humanity, in little ways, untill someone takes it beyond what most can stomach.
It still baffles my mind that people can do these sort of things, and not stop in thier tracks, because it would be impossible not to see how wrong/evil/depraved it is. Obviously the mother was an influence on the son, and the friend was a blind follower, indoctrinated never to speak out or take action against the in-group he was a part of. ame goes for people who dont help someone who is being abused or assaulted in public, because they are not part of the victims group they dont care enough to become involved. Mob mentality...noone steps in, noone voices dissent...everyone plays along even when they know its wrong. I might add that this is not limited to Japanese or asian culture, you can see it in any gang culture, religeous, political, any group culture.

romulus3 at 09:07 AM JST - 14th May
well that was half a news report. what indeed was the motive? probably some kind of vengeance because someone was bad mouthing someone else.
Fair dinkum! at 10:15 AM JST - 14th May
Yeah, the motive must be a doozy! Money? Drugs? Both? Different haircut?

The involvement of a 42-year-old woman in this is particularly disturbing.

These articles leave way too much information for the imagination...
