Woman wrongly arrested by Osaka Pref police; 9th wrongful arrest since last July

Police in Neyagawa, Osaka Prefecture, admitted Wednesday that they mistakenly arrested a woman in her 20s over her suspected involvement in a blackmail case which occurred in January of this year.

Police said that following a quarrel between a woman and a man in his 20s inside an Osaka game center on Jan 24, the woman forced him to buy her mobile phones, a tablet computer and other items worth 300,000 yen, TBS reported Wednesday. The man, who told police he just met the woman for the first time, got the number of the mobile phone and his mother later called the number and asked the woman her name.

Police said the man's mother then contacted them to register a complaint and they visited the woman at her residence. Later, the police showed a photo of the woman to the man and he said "That's her," TBS reported.

The woman was taken into custody but was able to provide an alibi for the time the dispute took place at the game center on Jan 24. Neyagawa police officials said on Tuesday that they had arrested the wrong woman and she was released after being detained for six hours.

Police did not say why the man identified the wrong woman and are continuing to question him.

According to officials, since July of last year, this is the 9th time police in Osaka Prefecture have arrested the wrong person.

He's embarrassed and trying to save face, poor girl. Of course he would be given a false number, the girl who conned him has probably done this before.

oopsies ... Lets hope they wern't too mean to her, in those 6 hours. Otherwise thats a pretty big payout...

There are so many "WTH"s in this story.

So this guy had a fight with a woman and then she "forced" him to buy her a bunch of electronics? What exactly could they have fought about that she would be able to instantly blackmail him for, especially as they had only just met. Why didn't he just walk away? None of this makes any sense.

how can the "wrong woman" be arrested when the guy said that it was her? it's more like "jerk falsely accuses woman of crime."

If it was the other way around it would been the full 21 days or whatever it is. Intentionally setting someone up should be grounds for a big fine and behind bars time.

Or it can be the released woman's friend. Because when you are giving to someone a false number it means you should know the owner, her age and everything. She was just unlucky

i agree with RV - not wrong person but false accusation.

Later, the police showed a photo of the woman to the man and he said “That’s her,” TBS reported.

Wow, they call that policework? Why not a lineup of SEVERAL pictures which the accused believes look like her? Showing them only one picture is a recipe for disaster.

How does one "force" someone to buy them things?? Blackmail?? Over what? The guy sounds like an idiot.

"wrongly arrested by Osaka Pref police; 9th wrongful arrest since last July"

hmmm....

As usual, we don`t get the full/real story. It sounds like the guy met her on some dating site, then the woman tried to blackmail him. Or maybe his story is complete rubbish.

Get it together Osaka police, people will start to lose trust in you guys.

From where/why the police have the photo of that woman?

"9th wrongful arrest since last July"

This is the real story. Yet with the exception of the headline there is no news at all on this stunning admission.

If the mother of the guy and him visited the residence of the so called perp, then why didn't the police go to her residence instead of just showing a photo. Something missing here and hard to determine whether it was lack of due dilligence on the police side, or just wrong information from the so called victim.

That they've admitted to so far...

I'd like to know about the other 8 arrests. This woman was let free after just 6 hours.... record time as far as Japan goes. How long were the other 8 detained?

Well this is progress. They are actually out there doing some work instead of sitting in the koban all day. With a little more practice they might actual arrest some criminals. Stick with it boys!

Maybe the man is lying from the start to cover up something else.. OR woman made the false alibi..
