The police should check if Noriko was in the initial stages of pregnancy - perhaps this was the motive behind her murder. Check if she was blackmailing anyone, maybe her lover a fellow worker. Farakh Malik

what....the...hell?!?
I didnt know there was a Mister Marples. a long lost brother perhaps. I'm a man too but imagine that sometimes the woman can be a victim
[So the police can figure out within a few days how this woman was killed even though her body was found in a nasty sludge tank but we still have no information on how Iijima Ai died even though her body was found her assumably cleaner apartment.]
After speaking to my Japanese colleagues I found out that a 'sludge' tank is indeed a septic tank. According to them she was alive in the septic tank for some time before she drowned. This country never ceases to shock me.
Killer was not smart at all: ...tank was closed but not locked, they said. Surely not a perfact crime. She left at 8:00PM from her work and she died at 8:00PM. Is she a goast or have two bodies???
Question carefully the cleaner!!!!!!!
Man or woman. If the sludge (septic I presume) tank was closed, why did he/she open it? those things are not normally opened by the regular cleaner guy, they have specialists for that, what was he/she gonna do in there? I find that strange. Then again this is Nippon.
The woman's body was found 6 AM on Friday. She was last seen Wed PM at 8. They "estimate" she died Thursday. Determine time of death is usually plus or minus a couple hours, based on various factors. Autopsies take a while to perform, so this "estimate" is made by cops completely unschooled in the medical sciences. There is absolutely know way of knowing at this point how long she was alive in the tank for, or if she was at all conscious. She may have been close to death when they threw her in the tank. I for one hope she never recovered from the knock on the head, and I hope the knock on the head came from behind, so she didn't see it coming. Otherwise it would certainly be an absolutely horrible way to go.
'sludge'usually refers to the mix of solids/liquids that are most easily located in any speptic tank, ie - water, shit and wee, if one is allowed vocabulary to say it.
Fortunately for the poor woman discovered there - her 'depressed skull' injury, probably meant she knew nothing about that.
Sludge could also mean the residue from an industrial milling or grinding process suspended in oil, or concrete dust in water, anything where fine particulates are suspended in a liquid and don't settle out quickly.
Very nasty. Perhaps we have found a crime where waterboarding would be an appropriate punishment. I hope this poor woman didn't know what happened to her because there would have been no way to save herself.

First thing to do is find out why the "sludge tank" (whatever that is) was unlocked and who had access to the lock or knew it was unlocked.

It's called an autopsy.

Read it again BBLeo. She died 24 hours after she was seen leaving work.
