Ewww, horrid. Gives new light and variation to the urban legend about dead bodies in hotel rooms.

Surely they remember who rented the room and have a desription and know if he or she was accompanied by a female or is the woman in question. Come on. Surely the cleaning staff either noticed the case or thought it odd the "Do not distub" sign was out day after day. If the room was rented for a length of time, surely they thought it strange they never saw the person again. Or something. Come on.

....fire fighters, police and hotel staff investigated. But it wasn’t until Friday that an employee found the suitcase, which a police investigator later opened to discover the body.

How inept the resue depts. are in Japan, that it took an employee of the hotel to find the suitcase even with a strong odor 'leading the way'?

yuki I bet you a million more then likely everyone including the hotel staff and rescue people thought it was one of those detergent suicides that was all over the news a few months ago, so they were probably just doing a quick search to see if no one was in some bathroom dead. And is what probably prompted the evacuation, again like those cases a few months ago since it can be toxic if someone did a detergent suicide. The employee probably just ran across the suitcase while doing some room cleaning.

Though its hard to say without all the details.

how can a room cleaner not notice a large foul smelling suitcase. I wonder if the plastic bag was sealed? I guess not if the smell got out... It must have been pretty bad if the smell seeped down a floor.

I stayed in that s**thole of a hotel years ago. It was stuffy, all the rooms were terrible. A typical business hotel. Service was surly and crawling with ladies of the night. This story does not surprise me.

Sounds like someone couldn't afford a funeral.

"The body was that of a trim woman"

    I believe that.

zurcronium - Hotel California? Nessie, from Scotland, will get the reference?

this sounds like one of those creepy videos of girls being vacuumed in plastic bags gone wrong. Or a really cruel way to off somebody. I certainly hope she was dead, from something quick and unsuspected when they stuffed her in the suitcase, rather than suffocated inside the bag in the case.

Something that is curious, is a body takes a while to put up a stink like that, maybe a few days, which means the dude that offed her either has been paying for the room all this time, by credit card (which I doubt) or the body just stayed in an unused room for a while, OR, it was in there while somebody was using the room....

I think a staff member did it. How else would a suitcase get there? After a checkout the cleaning staff go in and clean. They may have cleaned very well.

Hard to believe some one has the time, tools, & such to cut up a human that can be stuffed into a suitcase. Also without leaving some form of a mess. Crumbs even getting a turkey ready for Xmas is a task to me.

J-cops prove incompetent once again.......cant these keystones EVER do anything right. I mean if your evacuating 2 floors it wud have been kinda pruttent to have a master key if no one opened the doors & it shud have been easy to figure out where the stench was coming from.

    pathetic once again

Hey GW! Don't be so hard on the J-cops. At least the opened the case to see what was in it, unlike the dummy in a bag from last week.

If you think about it, it's a good way to dispose of a body. The perpetrator probably killed her somewhere else, then brought the suitcase to the hotel, where he could blend in with other guests carrying luggage. It's possible he never even checked in at all. Unlike other hotels in that area, the Shinjuku Washington Hotel is highly automated (you can check in and out from an ATM). It was the first hotel in Japan to adopt this kind of electronic transaction, when it first opened around 1982 or thereabouts.

It more seems like it started with a humor as if a girl can fit in a suitcase, may be one of the usual crazy things done. And later the guy left her there to die or to teach her a lesson. She must have died of suffocation or the fear of being alone.

It's possible to die of "the fear of being alone"? I didn't know that.

This simple sentence says so much that is true about Japan.

Smythe, the statement does not say the body was cut up in pieces. It says it was curled up in a fetal position (like a fetus in the womb).

How big a suitcase was it to fit a non-dismembered adult female into? Must have been a pretty large case that should have been noticed. Anyway, as others have said just plain creepy.
