Youth escapes from reform school, then turns himself in

KAGAWA —

A 19-year-old youth, who had been admitted to Shikoku Juvenile Reform School for robbery, escaped from the complex in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, on Monday, but turned himself in two hours later.

At around 8:30 p.m., a staff member was assembling the 18 boys at the school when the youth in question complained of stomach pains and said he was going to the toilet. School authorities found the lattice removed from the lavatory window, and suspecting he had broken out, notified police of the escape. About two hours later, the boy turned himself in to a nearby police station. The school is currently inspecting facilities to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

Why do Japanese people love turning themselves in? Is it just to prove that they could have escaped had they really wanted to?

Japan is definitely behind the times. They still have reform school. Japan should get with it.

Shikoko is that little island off Honshu, isn't it? Probably built like Alcatraz!!!!!!! I think he busted out there, had a look around, saw he couldn't get off that island and came up with another brilliant idea ... "Maybe the food in that joint wasn't so bad ....". And he finds his way back :)

I think it's better than juvi. Reform schools (should) focus more on learning rather than punishment.
