Also, another issue hurting the movie business is that the entertainment industry realizes that a potentially much more profitable niche is more adult-oriented, 12-14 episode per season television series. Shows like AMC's recently-concluded Breaking Bad, HBO's Game of Thrones, or the online-only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black from Netflix are the future of Hollywood in the eyes of many people.

The theatre experience is terrible compared to years ago. Overpriced for one, also people don't shut up, their phones blaze light all over the theatre, and people blurt out key spoilers if they've seen the movie before a moment before something important. Don't forget that the trailers show key spoilers as well, ruining the films as well. I find little reason to go even if I'm interested if people no longer can sit still.

I love the shared experience in the cinema but sadly all the imagination has gone to TV and games.

Sales are depresssed because the primary market for the past 30 years (college and under) has more options for "content" -- digital media -- than ever before.

I think the main reason for the decline is not so much movie quality, although there are very few good movies on now, but the fact that everyone is returning to the 'small screen'. Western TV is FAR more gripping these days than pretty much anything on the silver screen, so why bother shelling out? What's more, TV has now staggered its premiere dates among big shows so that there's nearly always something good on throughout the year (well, not so much Saturdays and in mid-summer, or the week with the Super-Bowl -- but that's also TV).

Are you sure TV caused the movies to deteriorate or perhaps lack of quality movie ideas caused people to give up and move to TV? The biggest stars that make a buck just on their name are still making movies. Its the slightly less famous actors/actresses that may have gotten fed up and moved to the "small screen".

Either way, I agree there are enough good shows that I don't have to worry about the movies, save the occasional Disney movie with my kid. And living in Japan I don't really go with the TV schedule, just record or download the shows and watch them when I feel like it.
