TOKYO —
Actress Anne Suzuki, 20, is spending eight weeks in New York studying English at a language school. Before leaving Japan, Suzuki said, “Last year, I visited Finland and Morocco and thought if I had been able to communicate with local people somehow, it would be more enjoyable. So I’ve decided to learn English first of all.
“My friends suggested to me that the best way to learn English in New York would be to get a boyfriend,” Suzuki told reporters seeing her off at Narita. “So if my English has improved dramatically the next time you see me, you can guess that I found one.”

"every time there is an uplifting news blurb here about a talented Japanese celebrity"
I must have missed those ones...
This article doesn't describe Miss Suzuki's talents, list her work or give any indication of what she's famous for.
Nor is there any photo showing her supposed 'beauty'.
Maybe people were just commenting on the complete irrelevance of this article.

Well lipscombe, with all due respect calling her a blint and saying that it's only newsworthy if she got hit by a taxi is hardly respectful of any female. I'm sorry you are so hateful towards her and others of her ilk, but you are aware that as I had pointed out before this was in the entertainment section, right? If this were in the national or world section it would be ridiculous but it is in the entertainment section and why would anyone complain about celebrity news in the entertainment section?

sukebeoyagi,
Spot on. That is one of the main reasons Japanese performers don't get hired to work in Hollywood. They actually want people who feel at least a little comfortable speaking the language the movies are in. Good on Anne for making a step that should help her career and certainly will not hurt it.

Could you please give an example of a bitter, misogynistic post from this thread? Cuz frankly, I don't see it.

Glad to see she is going to follow the idiotic advice of her friend!

Well I got deleted for being off topic with my comment about my wife's learning English (especially the swear words) by getting a boyfriend (that would be me) so let's have another go. Learning in a native speaking country is of course the best plan and she should have plenty of time to live it up while kicking it in the Big Apple. Good for Suzuki san but is this really news or some blurb put out by her agency?

oh rjr, tut tut. what your tunnel visioned 'misogynism' radar didnt detect is that I would have made exactly the same kind of comments if the article had been about a man. part of the problem with that however and another source of irritation for me is that this kind of naff article is almost NEVER about men.

Good for her!!!!!!!!!!!!

She must be a genius if she can learn English in 8 weeks... even with a boyfriend. Maybe she's just goin' to have some fun and take some time off...

Wow, lots of comments just because a Japanese person (with some fame) is going to study English. Imagine the comments if she were to study Chinese, too! Tahoochi- 8 weeks plus 6 years of Ministry of Education approved English education, maybe more if she attended an elementary school that taught English.

I wish I were 20 and in New York and knew where she was going to study. "Sure, I'll help you learn english babe!"
lovevictim at 02:30 PM JST - 28th March
