Actress Masami Nagasawa will make her stage musical debut next year when she stars in Suzuki Matsuo’s production of the world-famous musical “Cabaret.” Nagasawa, 29, will star as songstress Sally.
It will be Nagasawa’s first musical performance, Sankei Shimbun reported. “I wanted to take a new step forward as an actress and thus, decided to take on this challenge," she told media.
The first production of “Cabaret” premiered on New York's Broadway in 1966 and the movie version starring Liza Minnelli won eight Academy Awards in 1972. The plot takes place in a burlesque theater called The Kit Kat Club in Berlin, Germany during the 1930s as the Nazi Party began to gain power. It is at this seedy nightclub where the protagonist Sally, a talented cabaret performer, meets a struggling American writer, Cliff, with whom she has a relationship.
Nagasawa said: “It has always been a dream of mine to perform in a play directed by Matsuo and I’m excited to be given a role in this production. While I do feel some anxiety and pressure, I’m more excited than anything else and hope many people will come to see Matsuo’s production of ‘Cabaret.’”
According to Matsuo, when Nagasawa was cast as Sally, she declared, “I’m willing to do anything.”
“Cabaret” will begin its run next January and is scheduled to be staged in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and other major cities.

I don't know if she can sing, but she can act. And she looks great. Good luck to her.
