AKB48 member Atsuko Maeda's 'graduation' announcement concert to be released on DVD

TOKYO —

The management company in charge of the AKB48 idol empire, AKS, announced this week that footage from the concert at which group member Atsuko Maeda announced that she was leaving (or “graduating from” as AKS refers to it) the group in March is to be released as a DVD.

One of the more popular members of the group, an emotional Maeda, 20, stunned 25,000 fans at Saitama Super Arena in March when she told them, “I have something to tell you. I am really apprehensive about the future but I have to move on and make way for younger members.”

Maeda is to officially “graduate” on Aug 27.

The announcement was followed by three days of live shows and other surprises at Tokyo Dome. AKS announced this month that a DVD box set version is to include video of those shows, as well as behind-the-scenes footage and will go on sale Sept 5 for 18,900 yen.

AKS also announced that a concert is to be performed by “Team A” at the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara in August to celebrate Maeda’s time in the group.

AKS, go get a real name and real life, made possible, I hope, with the real money you piled up as part of this manuactured pile of bubbles and fluff. And plaid short skirts.

Japanese people have an unhealthy obsession with these teenage girls. I once sold my coworker a ticket for 3000 that lets you shake hands with a random girl.

What a fabulous business model. Give the dumb punters just what they want. The shame is that they want this stuff. USD 200 for a DVD?
