Aya Ueto wins Fur of the Year award

Aya Ueto wins Fur of the Year award
Aya Ueto holds her award. Japan Fur Association

TOKYO —

Actress Aya Ueto, 26, is the 2011 winner of Fur of the Year, an award given by the Japan Fur Association to the celebrity whose image best matches fur. The award has been given seven times before.

A beaming Ueto appeared wearing a Chinchilla fur coat worth 5 million yen. “I hope my image is good for fur,” she said. “I like wearing fur casually.”

Ueto, who is dating EXILE lead singer HIRO, 42, was asked if she would wear her fur and dress ensemble out on a date, but she continued her policy of not talking about her relationship.

Beauty is skin deep. 5 Million Yen coat is shallow and not deep.

The award has been given seven times before.

And it just gets better and better.

Hmm while I love Aya more than anyone else on JT, I think she may be starting to lose it, and is time for me to turn my attention to something younger and sporting less signs of ageing.

she continued her policy of not talking about her relationship

I predict this policy will expire when the engagement and ensuing big yen media coverage of the wedding is announced.

I know I'll get a minus for this but COME ON! SERIOUSLY!? Seems like almost every day that we are hearing about these "waste of time" awards. After the quake they canceled marathons and festivals and other things but stuff like this still gets the green light. People are out there trying to figure out how to get there life back and intead of giving money and support to those people they are more willing to shell out cash for a silly award to someone for wearing the best looking dead animal?

I'm dissapointed in celebs that participate in things like this. Dead animal skin is more important than living people struggling to get back their lives?

PETA recently issued a statement denouncing Super Mario's tanuki suit, despite the fact that it is made up entirely of electrons and photons. Considering that, I don't find their silence here to be strange. I think they are actually a group of ranchers trying to sabotage the kindness to animals message from the inside.

In other news, I much prefer women without fur.

  • 8

I don't like furs but what is the difference between fur and leather?

  • 2

    cleo

what is the difference between fur and leather?

On one level, none at all. On another level, at least leather can be looked on as a by-product of the food industry that is put to practical use, while fur animals are raised and killed for shallow fashion, just because they were unfortunate enough to be born with a beautiful coat.

Disclaimer - I don't wear leather, but seeing others wearing it doesn't give me the same heebie-jeebies and feeling of distain for the wearer that Ueto's dead jacket does.

  • 7

    Nicky Washida

I was actually wondering myself why PETA are so quiet here in Japan. It has got to be one of the worst places in the world for wearing fur (maybe bar Russia but at least they have the excuse that it is cold there). Here in central Tokyo I see these dollys prancing around with their dead animals round their necks, and Im not even that militant about fur but I want to slap them. Maybe its just them though, not the fur!

I know, I know, i just have to be more accepting. This is Tokyo, not London. "Its not bad, its not wrong, its just different" - right?!

Funny story - in a very posh hotel in central Tokyo I took my daughter to the toilets (she was only about 1 1/2 at the time) and a woman had left her fur stole on the counter. My daughter went mental, yelling "WAN WAN!!! WAN WAAAAANN!" and trying to grab the fur! I kept telling her it wasnt a doggy but she wasnt having any of it. The look on the womans face as she snatched up her precious fur and stormed out was priceless!

zichi - to answer your question very little I think. I dont know so correct me if I am wrong but does leather come from animals bred for meat anyway? Whereas fur is raised only for fashion?

  • 8

    BurakuminDes

The animal fur coat makes her look old. I can't believe she is only 26! She really looks 50ish.

  • 6

    browny1

    Buraku - totally agree.

Perhaps the foto itself is not a good reproduction, but add the fur and she becomes decidely 50's.

Innuit wear fur as a necessity - Tarento wear fur as a sign of ignorance.

And what is the difference between being bred for meat as opposed to being bred for fashion?

I'm not against you BTW, but it does pose some serious questions for me. I eat a lot of meat, wear leather clothes and shoes but think fur is awful. I should be one side or the other so I somehow feel disempowered to say how bad she looks becasue of the fur. That would be hypocritical, right?

  • 1

    pamelot

The animal fur coat makes her look old.

That particular style of mink "stole", plus the hemline and shape of her dress, is too matronly...

"Elegance", and "conservatively dressed", are not always the same thing.

  • -3

    cleo

So you do not have a pair of shoes that has leather?

Indeed I do not possess any shoes with leather, nor a leather handbag. I once bought a pair of supposedly soft resin slippers that when I took them out of the wrapping turned out to have bits of pigskin stuck to the soles to prevent slipping. I returned them to the shop.

    @zichi

I don't like furs but what is the difference between fur and leather?

Good point. I really hate furs and I don't like people wearing fur , though, I know the animals go through the same cruelty and horrible death regardless of whether they die for their skin or fur or for the meat we eat, but I think as we get our daily meat and the leather goods in a processed form it less remind us to where it comes from. Fur is much more like the alive animals and more awakening what we really do.

For me people wearing fur, feels like the barbaric Huns are back marauding in animal skins and furs. I think it was O.K. for them but I don't like it on our modern age people.

    It"S ME

This will get me some thumb-downs(gotta love JT).

I don't mind leather, have saved my skin a few times as I wear leather jackets, etc while riding my bikes.

The way I see if you kill an animal use as much of it as possible, so we kill thousands of cows, pigs, sheep and throw away the leather/skin? Truly a wasted resource, that impacts no-one and costs little extra.

I like that natives waste very little or thrown little away as they respect the animal and are thankful for it giving it's life to sustain them.

Now I am against furs that come from animals solely raised to make fur-coats and where the meat is wasted/ditched.

BTW, fur is just leather that hasn't had the hair removed before the curing process.

  • 2

    Sasoriza

Well, we could write to Softbank and protest, especially since they appeal to animal lovers with Kai-kun in their commercials.

By the way, for me the biggest difference between fur and leather is that you get attacked (in other countries, not Japan) if you wear fur; there's bigger chance you get robbed or even worse, God forbids, if you wear fur, because in fur you look like you have more money, and you are much less mobile; in fur you look fatter than in leather.

For me, meat is food and therefore a basic necessity, but that is just my opinion.

I'm not against you BTW, but it does pose some serious questions for me. I eat a lot of meat, wear leather clothes and shoes but think fur is awful. I should be one side or the other so I somehow feel disempowered to say how bad she looks becasue of the fur. That would be hypocritical, right?

I eat meat too, I dont wear leather clothes but I do have some leather shoes - Id rather not wear them but I cant seem to find any other material that doesnt cripple my feet (I seem to have very weird, sensitive feet!) but to be honest I am not especially militant about leather, whereas I really dont like fur. I think maybe for me its because I see leather as coming from an animal that is being fully used anyway. And I have no problem with people like the inuit who use fur as a necessity. But expensive fur as a fashion statement and nothing else - it just grates on me. if that makes me hypocritical then I guess I am a hypocrite!

One of the things I love about Japan is how it is a place apart from the rest of the world. As others have said, wearing fur in other parts of the world are often politically incorrect these days, but not in Japan. My own view is that the Animal Rights people are nutcases, and people shoulod wear fur as they desire. From ancient times, human beings have been using this natural rescource. One of the purposes anumals were created for was to provide us humans with food and clothing. More power to this lady and her fur wearing, but I have to say that this particular one looks slightly freakish, and it definately makes her look older.

  • 2

    Pukey2

One of the purposes anumals were created for was to provide us humans with food and clothing.

Oh, pleeeze! Did that come out of the bible? Animals existed way before humans came to being. And while some animals do eat others, I've never heard of any animal skinning another to wear their fur. To me, there isn't much difference between leather and fur which is one of the reasons I'm a vegan. I want to minimize my part in the use and abuse of animals. However, I do understand why some would regard fur as worse than leather. If an animal is to be slaughtered, I would rather see as much of it used as possible. I believe that's how some people think, like the Inuits. As for you opinion that animal rights people are nutcases - that's your opinion. In my opinion, people who wear fur but don't have the guts to skin animals like dogs and cats alive themselves are hypocrites, especially materialistic airheads like this ugly girl in the photo.

Shame on her. Would she skin a kitten?

  • 2

    Jannetto

I think the vanity aspect also bothers me - the only reason anyone outside the polar regions wears fur is because they think they look good. Why would a dead animal make you look good?! I do try avoid leather, but in winter I find it's the only thing that keeps my feet warm but not sweaty! Haven't owned a leather bag in years though.

The whole concept of wearing fur just seems really outdated & thoughtless.

The photo does make Aya look older than 26, years older :(

Don't have a problem wearing leather. The skin is a by-product from making meats from animals and shouldn't be wasted. At least put it to some good use since the animal died providing it to us!

Fur is generally taken from animals raised and killed solely for their ... fur! How brutal is that?! In this modern era where we have synthetics and even goose down feathers (another by-product of meat manufacturing usually), fur clothing, generally, is NOT necessary!

The exception is the location you live in like the North Pole or some other cold place where the inhabitants would benefit from it for their survival.

"Innuit wear fur as a necessity - Tarento wear fur as a sign of ignorance."

You must really think the Innuit are a backwards people. They don't wear fur out of "necessity" they do so out of culture and tradition as they can afford the very best in gortex and thinsulate that LL Bean can offer. Just like they don't spear their whales and seals and "mush" home on the dog sled. They shoulder their remington rifles and hop on their snowmobiles.

  • -2

    OssanAmerica

"On one level, none at all. On another level, at least leather can be looked on as a by-product of the food industry that is put to practical use, while fur animals are raised and killed for shallow fashion, just because they were unfortunate enough to be born with a beautiful coat.:

How do you know the chinchilla wasn't stir fried with baby bok choy, bean sprouts, oyster sauce and a splash of sesame oil and wasn't absolutely fantastic at the table? Especially if the source was a Chinese fur farm, where incidentally some of the worst abuses of the furbearing animals occur. It's hypocritical to differentiate between leather as a by-product of the meat industry and fur bearting animals from the view of of a devout vegan since the end result is exactly the same for the animal.

  • 0

Fur (and animal skins in general) is the traditional clothing of every human being that has ever lived. It isn't politically correct to say but it just so happens to be true. In this case, Ueto is wearing fur because she is a 'talento' and it is an expensive article of clothing. Because of the expense, relatively few people wear them these days. The idea that the human use of animals is wrong is a modern concept that is a luxury for people with the wealth, means, and sense of moral superiority to deem it so.

To be clear, I am with you in that hypocritical boat. I can't quite get my head clear on this one.

Me too. Its difficult I think because we dont fall one side or the other. I have no problem with the necessary use of animals - food etc, and as long as the killing itself is as humane as possible, given that you are, um, killing something.

I dont own a leather bag, or a leather jacket (shame cos I actually quite like them!) but leather shoes for me at least are kind of a necessity. I wish they werent - would much rather by cheaper shoes and many non-leather shoes and boots are really nice! I will happily wear a fake-leather bag or jacket - I can never tell the difference these days anyway!

I think maybe another reason fur grates on me so much is that - for me - it is just such an ostentatious, "look at me look at me! Im rich!", give me attention! kind of image. Its not even discreet. Ive known many people like that who feel the need to show off their wealth (I remember being mortally embarrassed once walking into a restaurant with a family friend wearing a floor length silver fox fur coat - we all walked 5 steps behind her while she marched in, nose in the air, totally oblivious to the death stares she was getting!) - and the vast majority are just not comfortable with themselves at all. It is not attractive and it just leaves me with a bad feeling, especially given everything that has happened in Japan this year.

Well everyone has their little pet peeve. The PETA people say no "fur or skins for clothing", the global warming people say "no more use of fossil fuels" but the only way we are going to enhabit this planet with 7 billion of us is to balance what we use. We need the fossil fuels to make nylon, orlon, rayon etc., we cannot make use of more agrable land for hemp and cotton when we need that land for soy, corn and wheat to feed all these people. Balance people, Balance. The "I never wear skins or leather" people are using up the synthetics faster than the rest of us. The "I never eat meat" people are using up the agracultural products faster than the rest of us.

Note that this is JAPAN, There are NOT animal rights protection laws. I bet there are other countries like this but this one really eats the cake by wasting all this money on this disgusting people wearing dead animals for useless awards. How shallow and pathetic. I did have a piece of fur before, long time ago when I was in uni. When I realize where it came from, I threw it in the trash. Nah, I'm not going to wear something stolen from a living being where I clearly do NOT need it. The truth is that If I was living in the northpole, wearing fur wouldn't be criminal. That we have come to the point of overkill and drive to extinction many of their species, well...that will have serious consequences. More sooner than later. And No, no animal freak lover here or whatever, just someone educated. Someone with common sense you may say. I'm totally OK with animals being used for meat and all the by products that come from them, but animals slaughtered solely for their beautiful coats? NO THANK YOU! Japan is not the North Pole! Have you ever seen how butchers skin animals? Most of them are still alive during skinning, plus there is a huge percent of these being DOGS and CATS.
