    Saw her murdering the Star Spangled Banner on TV this morning. Like that parody from Family Guy or the Simpsons (don't remember which)

    I've read that that's a clue that there's a recording being played. The ear piece gets the audio feed direct from the recorded audio, while the rest of the sound system injects a slight delay before the audience hears it. If the singer is listening to the music in the ear piece, she can be noticeably ahead of the music the audience hears if the latency in the audio system is bad. To avoid that, they will pull the ear piece if the delay is too great and just sing along with what the audience is hearing.
