Japan-based Korean pop star BoA, 24, is to make her Hollywood debut in a forthcoming movie directed by Duane Adler. BoA, who will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of her Japanese debut on May 31, is believed to have been spotted by Adler while performing in LA, after which she was contacted and offered the role, sources at her management agency said.
The movie, titled "Cobu 3D," is scheduled for release in early 2012. BoA will be starring opposite "Dancing With the Stars" winner Derek Hough, 26, in an interracial love story about rival underground dance clubs in New York. BoA and Hough will play two star-crossed dancers whose forbidden love is threatened by the rivalry between their families. Director Adler is best known as the writer of dance movies "Step Up" and "Save the Last Dance."
When she was a child, BoA received two years' training involving vocal, dance and Japanese lessons, and released her debut album in South Korea at the age of 13 in 2000, followed by a mini-album in Japan in early 2001. She speaks Japanese, Korean and English and has recorded songs in Mandarin Chinese.
Despite her many talents, she told reporters, "I am expected to become a pro dancer in a short space of time and the pressure is immense. However, the whole experience is a lot of fun. I want people to see me dance. Also, I expect most of my fans have never seen me act alongside a male lead before, so there should be something new for them."
The movie's nternational distribution is being handled by Lionsgate. South Korea's CJ Entertainment, as well as BoA’s label S.M. Entertainment, will be co-producing the film. The backers are believed to have worked out distribution deals for Korea, China and Japan in an East-meets-West partnership designed to attract fans in both Asia and America.

Like many people from overseas that head to the US, they only get bit parts and then their place is taken by the next person. I know shes Korean but how many Japanese/other Asian have we seen go to Hollywood and have gotten really major success? I cant think of anyone outside of the martial arts field. At best she`ll end up in the perpetual supporting roles.

It's a shame that so few Japanese actors have studied English seriously. There are stars over here of A-list calibur, but how many can pull off natural English? No Hollywood producer wants an actor who speaks Katakana (not to mention Asian-Americans rarely get roles in movies anyway). The same goes for musicians. Why would you write a whole song in a language you're not fluent in? Instantly turns me off to a band.

Wow. I am so sick of BoA being forced down our throats all the time. She is a has been. She has had her time, but now it is time to get a clue and step down. Her popularity has waned immensely so I think her career is too cool at the moment to heat up again.
'Eat You Up' was a flop and I HOPE this movie will be too. Otherwise we will have to deal with being choked by having her shoved down our throats even more.

Boa's reference to dancing is about the tap-dancing she has had to learn in preproduction for the movie. She has indicated that it is not as easy as it looks. I am glad she finally came to Canada and am waiting for a Toronto paper or show to ask her when a Toronto concert (her own or with SM Town) might happen! RE: her North American album-I did wish that she had released her Best & USA album here instead-it had some wonderful songs as did her Japanese album, Identity. However, maybe it was for a reason.
