"In the latter film, O’Toole played a dissolute actor preoccupied with drink and debauchery, seemingly a tailor-made role for a star known in his early years for epic carousing with such fellow partiers as Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Peter Finch."

He, like Keith Richards, has all those wild years written all over his face. Still, I've always enjoyed his acting.

Reading someones name and age on the headline often is bad news, but I am glad he is alive and well. Maybe we will see him again on the screen when he regains his heart for acting around 89 years old. THAT will be something for an Oscar!

Fay - he was brought up in Leeds. Not Ireland. Fiercely proud of his Irish heritage, but much more an Englishman than a spudmuncher.

I happened to see My Favorite Year a couple of nights ago, for the first time in years. I wondered what it would be like to go through life like that, seemingly without effort or a care in the world.

"I'm not an actor! I'm a movie star!"

Thank you, Mr. O'Toole, for many years of entertainment. Sorry to see you go, but you've still got a lot of years ahead of you. You may come back before all is said and done, and I sincerely hope you do.

I had the great honour of meeting Mr O'Toole many years ago, and he was an absolute gentleman, even to my doltish galoot of a scouse companion. After graciously chatting with us for some time, he doffed his hat, bowed deeply and retreated backwards into the theatre. Unforgettable.

I look forward eagerly to the third volume of his memoirs. The first two volumes I would recommend without hesitation to anyone who wants a damned good read.

Longer may he live, bless his pickled self. He must have had an absolute blast back in the day.

I'll bet if a director comes with an interesting project, he'll come out of retirement.

A great actor who must have the constitution of a horse. @Mr Coughandoffalot - 'doltish galoot' was outdated even in the days of T.E. Lawrence!
