TOKYO —

NHK “News Watch 9” announcer Yuko Aoyama, 38, will postpone her wedding party out of respect for the estimated 20,000 dead or missing after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan. Aoyama and her husband, 37, held a family-only wedding ceremony on Sunday, and their party was originally planned to take place on March 27.

Since the earthquake hit, Aoyama has been reporting almost non-stop from the most severely hit areas in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, as well as in the Tokyo studio. “News Watch 9,” usually a one-hour program, has been on the air for three hours every night since the earthquake.

“As a person directly involved in reporting the horror of the earthquake and tsunami, I discussed it with my husband and we thought it best to postpone our wedding party. We may even cancel it,” Aoyama told reporters.

Aoyama was supposed to leave “News Watch 9” on March 25, and host the live talk show “Hello from Stadium Park” (Mon-Fri 1:05 p.m.) from April 4, but considering the situation, she may stay on a bit longer with the evening news program.

I hope she stays on News Watch 9, she's been doing a great job.

Good on her and her husband. A mature and considerate act in light of the tragedy in Tohoku. I actually hope that "toned-down" may become the new norm for celebs and their numerous wedding parties going forward.

I love this woman. One of the very few good female role models for young girls in Japan.

I guess because she originally announced her wedding selfishly on air in a bubble air head way..this apart from the apology at the time because of that is another way to apologise for this particular person. Got to think of her job and image.

I don't think I understand what you're trying to say.

    Agreed.

Japanese people are sensitive and responsible to their communities' needs and situations. She and her husband know how to respond and keep their love and marriage lives nurturing and blossoming. Japanese people weigh more public values than personal values.

harmoneeikaiwa, please read gently and reply politely:

you need to learn more, baby.

So... is it out of respect or is it because of her duties? Personally, I think it sounds like the latter, though of course the former may come into play as well. I think canceling it completely would be a step towards showing that's the case; but it's her party (and her husband's), and of course she has a right to do what she wants.

Best of luck either way -- both in the reporting and with said party.
