I have long given up on american movies. However I have to admit you cannot beat the stupidity of a title like "Captain America: The First Avenger".But the name is so true. If you do not obey Captain USA, you will be avenged. Ask countries like Iraq and Libya.

    I second that.

Captain America is a comic icon from way back, since the late 1930's it is a comic, has nothing to do with real life politics, it's just a story about a superhero fighting for truth and justice, just like Batman, Superman, X-men, etc. Nothing wrong with that. Japan has their Manga and their idols and heroes, no one is forcing you to watch it, it's just pure entertainment. But I forget, nowadays in a PC world, we have to change "Captain America's" name to "The first Avenger" to not piss off or alienate the rest of the world. My beef is with Hollywood that they would sell their souls and integrity in the name of the almighty $$$$ to allow countries like S.Korea, Ukraine and Russia to change the name. Personally, I would have told those countries, the name stays, if you don't want to buy our movies, no problem.

    Third that one.

Also "The First Avenger" is a hint/reference to the upcoming "Avengers" Movie.

All the current Super-Heroes movies will be tied into 2 movies next Year "Justice League" & "Avengers" hence many small cross-reference/hints in the current movies(example Stark Industries aka Iron Man's father).

Actually I did not know this but I am not interested in superheroes or manga. But the name is very important, many people won't like such a name.

Captain America actually first appeared in Captain America's Comic #1, March 1941. The First Avenger title certainly plays on today's mood of retribution. He is the oldest published hero, but not the first to join, in the Marvel Superhero Group, The Avengers. That's probably why it's titled The First Avenger. Also as noted in the article above, there was some concern that anything so blatantly American might be poorly received in some parts of the world.

So more than 60 years being named "Captain America" now all of sudden in order to not make some countries angry, we have to bow down and change his name in order to appease these countries? Give me a break! It would really be laughable, if it weren't so serious.

Why didn't they state the opening date for Japan? I thought this was "Japan Today". Another incomplete publication.

out of concern about anti-American sentiment.
But the only countries that took them up on it were Russia, Ukraine and South Korea

South Korea? Aren't they an ally or the U.S.? Don't they depend on the U.S. to keep them from being North Koreans?

If this gets its correct name when it finally arrives here, I'll eat my own head.

This is the place, remember, that bills a picture of three leather-clad derrieres with the title "Charlie's Angel" (Which one is the angel supposed to be?)

    Donnie Brasco? No - "Fa-koo"

The Princess Diaries? Try "Pretty Princess"

We Japanese find using the right name troublesome. Five words, one of them with a V in it? Forgetto itto.

Why worry about anti-American sentiment? Worry about anti-comic book movie sentiment.

LOVE NOT.....get over it...we are here...and we are not leaving...and no matter how much we may not be no1 in many things it will be a cold day in hell before we ever end up at 15 or 20 or wherever your homeland is. It doesn't bother anyone that you don't like the name America. Most Americans could care less that Russia doesn't want it. If it was Captain Russia it wouldn't bother us cuz we don't fear Russian influence among common people. (I won't even mention the Ukraine no need and S. Korea def needs us more than visa versa). So in this lifetime....Captain America will still be top 1,.2, or 3. Get over it!

Have you ever lived in S. Korea? I have and it is quite funny that they are living a very good and spoiled life in comparison to the North, but for some reason, they seem to forget where their freedom came from and if it weren't for the U.S. the country would be a giant Communist Korea. S. Koreans have very short memories. Half the foreign restaurants are American and for a country that hates us, they sure love our products and food, for sure! I heard many S.Koreans say, they don't need us and we should leave, I'm all for it! Let them do it. Funny thing is, every time the North start saber-rattling, they quickly ask us to stay and pressure us to help them and to give them the tools to thwart the North. What's next, will the S. Koreans complain to Hollywood if there is a scene in a movie that offends them, Hollywood will have to prepare an alternate scenes like Pearl Harbor in order not to offend the people??!

@bass4funk: I have lived in SK and your post is exactly my point. They enjoy the freedom secured for them by the U.S. but don't want the name "Captian America" for a film.

To Americans, respect and humility are known as "bowing down".

The world was not quite as global when this character was made primarily for an American audience. Nothing wrong with a little name change so that you don't appear an ethnocentric arrogant schmuck.

Besides, could you imagine the American reaction to Captain North Korea? It cuts both ways unless your arrogance makes you blind to one of the sword's edges.

Besides, the period of time that it made sense to be very proud as an American as ended. Even Superman renounced his U.S. citizenship.

Oh yeah, I note the film decided to stick with the 1940s. Knowing that I don't feel quite as bad about the title, but, you can't blame people for first thinking of more recent history.

I am curious just how long their gratitude should last. Might there be some reason why its dried up besides 60 years of time?

Just because the government seems to want U.S. troops in the country and continued American "support", don't assume the people do too.

  • -1

    techall

Most know that they need U.S. support but, like Okinawa, they don't want foreign troops on their soil. I never found much anti-American sentiment, just anti-military-on-our-soil.
