An act of children. The rightists of Japan, another group of children, are green with envy that China has such a rule.

It will not stop the desire for knowledge about the outside. Rather, it will only encourage it all the more.

Although I support the rights of people to watch what they like, I do have some sympathy with the idea to restrict some of the absolute garbage churned out by the likes of Discovery and History channels that those of us in the "free world" have to suffer. Fat men in black Tshirts rescue cats Fat men in black Tshirts hunt for ghosts Fat men in black Tshirts running a pawnshop Fat men in black Tshirts make a battle tank out of an old wheelbarrow. Maybe China is right, and it is we who should restrict this mind numbing drivel and stop the dumbing down of TV.

The promulgation was not only about foreign media, but also about domestic product not conforming to the traditional arts and virtue. So, dating programs, soap-operas, reality-tv, etc. were all given notice.

More 'virtuous' stuff, less fluff and entertainment. Of course, the real reason is they believed things were getting too 'foreign' (i.e. not promoting the party and national stability).

The world's biggest authoritarian dictatorship with the biggest population and second biggest economy with an expantionist military agenda stepping on the toes of all it's Asian neighbors conducting military traning with the United States as the desgniated enemy....and you're worried about a miniscule bunch of losers in black trucks annoying the hell out of everyone? One word.."perspective".

And the chinese government still hasn't gotten it into their thick skulls that you CAN'T CONTROL THOUGHT, no matter how hard they want to try. Let the people see what they want to see and come up with their own ideas. It may teach the Chinese television studios to improve on the good and get rid of the bad that comes out of foreign tv programs. One new thought can inspire thousands more, instead of trying to keep people tied down to old thinking.

You still do not understand that it is not about control of thought, it is about limiting the Kitsch. The Chinese are the most intelligent people in the world based on their scholastic results so nobody can limit their thoughts. Nothing wrong with limiting the brainless reality shows, the useless violence, porn and kitsch and nothing wrong with promoting Chinese culture and values.

I'm actually surprised at how Asians take interest in foreign media dominated by white and black casts and very few Asiatics, because we know the the typical white person would not pay attention to film or TV program with a predominantly Asian cast unless it's got martial arts with little or no character development.
