Peace Out
Good riddance. I am pretty sick of these American crime shows spreading false information and paranoia, although Law and Order was much worse than CSI.

Peace Out@Nobody holds a gun to your head to make you watch. There is a marvelous device called a "remote control" that you can use to switch from "paranoid" American police procedural dramas to Doraemon cartoons, amateur song competitions on NHK's "Nodo Jiman," or anything else that tickles your fancy. Now, at 10:44 on a Sunday morning, if you hurry you can catch soporific panel discussions about Japanese politics. Go for it.

Wait a second. This was suppose to show on Monday the 27th! It has already been out?
smithinjapan
CSI still works as a procedural given that each episode, or a string of them, can be a single story based on crimes, which are limitless, but the serial nature of the show died a long time ago with most of the major characters retiring. I just pray they pull the plug quickly on CSI: Cyber, because that spin-off is HORRIBLE!

@Peaceout It introduced a younger generation to the brilliance of The Who.

It is an interesting issue. Does TV reflect reality or reality reflect on TV? I watched the first episode of CSI and quickly realised who the murder was. It put me off watching any other episode. I prefer Jonathan Creek and Sherlock. I rarely see the end coming. For people who want to solve a crime story try Murder in sucessville. It's both interesting and a challenge.
Peace Out
@GalapagosnoGairaishu Clearly the point was what the show and others like it do to the people around me. Of course I did not watch the show except for enough episodes to see what they were doing. It took a few with CSI. With Law and Order it took only one.

Peace Out: "Clearly the point was what the show and others like it do to the people around me."
So, you have no ability to control yourself but are controlled by TV shows? And, no, you cannot say 'clearly' when trying to explain what you meant because even your justification doesn't make sense, let alone the initial rant.
Matthew Simon
False in formation and paranoia? You are aware this is a television crime drama show not real life yes?

Whenever it comes to TV programs, I think that the first rule, above all others, is that there are different courses for different horses. Meaning that different people will like different things. That said, in each genre, there are good shows and bad shows. Meaning those that are well done and those that are just horrible.
Whatever you think of CSI, it was a new type of show. One that focused on forensics and the solving of crimes "scientifically". I don't think it is an understatement to say that it changed how many people considered the solving of crimes. Using DNA. Trace evidence. Etc., etc. The phrase "follow the evidence" is now something that I think a regular person understands. And, in real life, the idea of using DNA and forensics to exonerate those that have previously been connected is something that many more people understand. Not as some complicated scientific/medical mumbo jumbo, but something they can understand on a working level. And that is at least partly due to "CSI" and shows that followed in its footsteps.
Now, in terms of some of the criticism, some is valid. Sometimes the shows were predictable. The villain was not always hard to guess. Sometimes things were unbelievable. It also dwelled in the "blood and gore", by virtue of its theme, so perhaps gave credence to stereotypes about life in the U.S.
However, some of this is just down to people's preferences of the types of shows they like. For me, CSI filled a certain niche in my viewing. As did/does NCIS. I am probably a typical viewer of these shows.
Conversely, you couldn't pay me to watch some of the reality shows that seem to dominate U.S. TV these days. Even The Amazing Race. And I know that some people love it. But its just not my thing.
One thing. Can we all agree that anything that involves the Kardashians should just be banished to the rubbish bin?!?! Just saying....

Name me another country that has close to anything remotely exciting going on in TV? I hope you are aware, it's the fan base that's keeping these shows alive. And it seems to be popular worldwide, maybe that's why it was on for so long. If you don't like the American shows, there are...maybe not, but there is something else to do out there.

...and ?

@smithinjapan I don't understand how the phrase "spreading false information and paranoia" confused you into thinking I was talking about what was happening in my own mind. I just really don't. Its really contingent upon me having correct information and not being paranoid to witness the spread and be able to report it, isn't it?
I don't have so much of a problem with disagreement about my opinion, I just can't see how anyone with any intelligence could misunderstand what I was saying. But then, I guess that could explain the popularity of the show, and the inability to see what it was doing.

When I want to chill, not think, and put off other work, I tune in.

Saw it last night. Terrible way to end a show.
Sue Jones
Regarding Law and Order SVU, many of the episodes were based on real-life cases. What kind of "false information and paranoia" are you describing?
toshiko
