Cyndi Lauper calls on world not to forget Japan

Out of all the 'Never forget Japan!' ego parading from some celebs, Cyndi is one of the few who actually seems genunine.

She is doing a great thing and yes I think genuine. I don't like to say this but what we really needed is someone with more clout, even if not so genuine... like Madonna!

"Those people can't be isolated and cut off... They could have radiation issues but I don't think you can catch radiation by shaking somebody's hands and giving them a hug. The only way to get back up again is to include them."

Thank you for that heads up, Cyndi. I'm sure the people up north are all thankful for your tree saplings, songs, and good intentions...

Had it not been for this selfless behavior, I might think you were over simplifying in trying to equate a healthy fear of radiation with being anti-social.

Yep, nobody goes up north, Cyndi. Not tourists, musicians, artists, organizations, volunteers, actors, actresses, dancers, comedy troupes, no-body.

But as a traveling singer-songwriter; and non-resident of Japan, who knows more than you?

If you had been paying attention you wud have known that Lady Gaga has done a few rounds in Japan to try to do something & while I will never buy her music she seems to want to help.

I have mixed thoughts on what Cyndi L did a year ago because I know people in Japan who work tours & many wanted to go home or head up north that cudnt because she didnt cancel, put a lot of local crew under tremendous stress, this time round was better thought out though.

I commend her actions. I think she feels closer to Japan's issue because she was here when the earthquake happened.

GW, I see your point of view but I think people think bigger of her because she DIDN'T cancel. She chose to stay and do what she came here to do. If I remember correctly, many people went to her concert. I'm sure they were more than happy. I guess it's a catch 22. But I give her props - she wasn't like one of many foreigners living here who hopped on a plane to get the hell out of here.

She might not have used the right words to express her concerns but she is genuinely worried about the people up north. She's just trying to ask people to reach out. I don't see why you're trying to dog her intention.

I'm sorry but I've seen part of the appearance on NHK world and I think it's just PR lingo to remind the world of Ms Lauper once again. "I just want to say to the world, please don't forget about Japan, it's very traumatic" oh my...

"I just want to say to the world" - if you want (and have) to say something, why don't you just say it and be done with it? And it has to be "the world" - no less. "it's very traumatic" - what, exactly, is that phrase supposed to mean?

"And I'm thinking 'Oh my God'" - now we know exactly what she was thinking at that moment, viz. "Oh my God". That's, I'm sorry to say that, nothing but american overexitedness at it's worst.

It reminds me of the 80s when they called a psychotic mass murderer a "person with difficult to meet needs" just in order to be politically correct and not to hurt this person's feelings... Well, as of sunday, there are 15,854 persons with life terminating issues related to the tsunami issue.

I'm not a mindreader and can't tell you if Ms. Lauper is out for a bit of an attention grab, but seriously , how can you tap out such a sneering condemnation of someone- anyone who is using their position to work some good in the world. Save your bitter cynicism for the useless old fossils running the whole circus; botching up relief work, dithering on compensation claims etc, and who covered up information in the first place. She might not be winning any oratorical awards anytime soon, but I personally think she's done a good thing.

If you're talking to the FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS, then you're talking to "the world". A little more actual reading for understanding and a little less snark please.

Fadamor, What does it matter what foreign correspondents think. I saw her perform two summers ago with her roots of southern blues and 80's stuff. I know she can be air head, but she means well. She is an entertainer, a great singer, not a politician with saavy words. Anyway, she raised the money to help these people in Tohoku. She genuinely cares for people.

That's exactly what I mean. If you're talking to foreign correspondents, you know that you're talking to "the world". You don't have to emphasize it in that "Oh-I'm-such-a-good-and-caring-person" way.

Like her or not, I do appreciate that she`s one of a few artists who actually visited the affected area, rather than staying in Tokyo like most the others and giving positive thoughts from the safety of the Ritz-Carlton...

There were, and are, many artists to visit. Many volunteers. Many people, donating. I resent it being all about her, when it certainly isn't.

Her ignorant comment, in one fell swoop, insulted all the others' efforts, as if hers only matters...

OMG, like, nobody visits up north, at all!

And BTW, anyone living and working in Japan is donating, by means of their taxes...

So, everyone, keep up the good fight, however, and from wherever you are doing it.

It doesn't matter one iota what the correspondents THINK. She was talking to them because they would be the conduit to get her words out to the world. She wasn't having a casual chat with friends, she was speaking on the record. THAT'S WHY SHE WAS THERE. Don't want her to use the phrase "say to the world"? Then don't let her talk to a group of foreign correspondents. In the grand scheme of things, her choice of phrases ranks near the bottom compared to the message she was trying to get out. But some people like to fixate in the insignificant.
