TOKYO —
Actress Eiko Koike, 27, and her wrestler husband Wataru Sakata, 35, on Thursday night held a lavish wedding party in Tokyo, attended by 420 guests. The couple actually got married last August.
At a press conference before the party, which was televised by TBS, Koike said, “I can be happy today thanks to my parents. I would like to make them happier with my husband.” Sakata, who gave her a 3-carat diamond ring, said, “I am glad I was able to give this ring to her, but I had to get beaten, punched and kicked in public a lot before I could afford it.”

I thought the idea of a husband was to take the girl off her parents hands, so to speak

A glutton for punishment. Should be a happy marriage.

Everything about her is lavish.

I hope her production company paid for the reception, a few more galas like this and her husband (a second-tier star in Japanese pro wrestling which is not exactly flourishing these days) will be getting punched and kicked for real by the bill collectors.

Wonder how much physical contact there will be now that they're married?

I thought they got married a while ago ? Japanese television producers are so strapped for material that they even get their talents to hold a wedding party all over again just for TV. I think these celebs love their lives in a goldfish bowl. I used to believe Koike was different to the usual idols, but not after this yuck-fest.

Marriage is (should be?) a one-time event in life. Personally I don't see the need to make a circus out of it. My own marriage was very intime, fixing happyness for life. I'd hate to have cameras and stuff around that, it was a very unique private event.

It's easy to have a wedding as Eiko when the TV paids everything just to have a "stupid" program where "sponsors" talk about their "job"...

They had that reception on TV the other night, and I was just amazed at the self-centeredness of them. Why put the thing all over Tee-Vee?

Whenever I see Koike I am always reminded of the time Shimada Shinsuke said she looked like the business end of a bullet train (the old snub-nosed one). Shinsuke can be obnoxious but he's pretty good with the one-liners!

Japan worships shopping - Japan is 'The Church of Consumption'. The amount of media time spent on advertising here is obscene. natosucks - is right - I was channel hopping at the time. I would switch back now and again to see which B-list past it celeb were peddling their business. Any reason to advertise themselves or their products. The sad thing is, many viewers probably didn't even realise that they were being CM'd.
